Many people use sticks they find laying on the ground. The price is right and they are literally weightless in your backpack.
Recently Olddog spoiled me by giving me some he made out of large knitting needles. I think he got 3 toggles from each needle and they cost only a couple of bucks or so, each. After cutting them with a hacksaw, he filed off the burrs. You can also get them in any color.
large knitting needles cut to size with tubing cutter.
A broken carbon arrow I use for hunting, I took it and cut it in 3" pieces made 3 sets of toggles.
I've used biners big and small (great for ensuring that the whoopie does not slip), aluminum toggles from AHE, camp sticks. Tend t use Dutchware nearly all the time now though.
Dutch buckles now, but i used to use a couple chunks of dowel rod i had laying around from my throwing hawk handles. A little big in diameter, but they are already seasoned and surprisingly super light.
Another was my extra aluminum tent stake, blackbird takes 2, tarp takes 4, i would carry 6 and use 2 for toggles. If'n i flung one through the woods (like a strong wind grabs the tarp or i tripped over a guyline after too much fire water at the campfire) i would just tie a water knot and pull a "toggle" stake.
Some small black anodized aluminum tubing. Larger in diameter than the arrow shaft or knitting needle but still very light. I add a loop of reflective cord in each one so they don't vanish (actually they're tied into my whoopies instead of a bead). Works great. Here's a thread where I was sending out freebies. I still have plenty of material left.
Toggles?! I don't need no stinking toggles! Not when I have Dutch Buckles!

I have old arrow shafts around. I dont carry what can be picked up off the ground. Weightlessness is a awsome thing!

Aluminum shaft with SS loops, I call them BOMB PROOF TOGGLES

Made mine out of deer antler
Maverik Chill Pipe cut to length for me. I like the end that says "Caution: Handle with care. Not a toy. Not intended for children under 12". It makes me feel good knowing I have at least one warning label on my stuff. :D
creative, ingenious, and generous as well.
Bamboo for me. Super light, super strong - natural.
I made my own carbon fiber toggles, but should have my new titanium toggles in the mail in about two days!!!!
I use deer antlers, cut to size. Works really well for me and I get to use another part of the animal I harvested
I get some aluminum arrow shafts and cut them with a pipe cutter. Then take some fine sand paper to dull the ends a bit. They are really light and work great.
I have a pair of biners that I put the Whoopies through. I ordered a set of Dutch buckles but didn't pay attention to the fact that my straps are two inches. Oh well when I get a hammock for one of my boys I will just make sure to get one inch straps for them since they are ALOT skinnier than dad is.
I use Dutch Buckles on my main hammock now. Love 'em.
BUT, for my other hammocks, I use 3" pieces of small ash branches from when I pruned the trees in my front yard. Cut the bark off of them, then painted 'em red for when I drop them on the ground. :shades:
Bloomgorge's Elephant Trunk clips or Dutch Buckles depending on the hammock.
I use climbing rated 'biners that I put through the MSH, and then just attach the whoopies to. Takes seconds to put up, and always good to have a couple of lightweight 'biners that can hold your weight around.
Here's where I got the idea:

Works like a charm for me.
A section of aluminum needle. 4 toggles + 2 fids from a $2.28 pair of US made ones from Walmart.
I use hillbilly toggles.

Or, just trail sticks.
Whoa! Those are cool. :D Head and foot end *giggles*
I like the idea of deer antlers too - au naturale.
I just use a tent pole repair sleeve http://www.rei.com/product/753464/da...r-sleeve-132mm cut down and sanded. ~3g each, colorful in case I drop one and not small enough to disappear. I keep intending to drill a hole and add a keeper string but never seem to get around to it.
Large Knitting needle... $0.25 at a local garage sale for a pair. Weigh almost nothing.
I drilled a hole, added some mason's line (soon to be zing-it) and larksheaded them to my whoopie loop... They're always there when I need them...
Sawed off aluminum tube section from old umbrella.
I made myself a tent stake bag last night and in my mix of stakes I have two nail style aluminum stakes. So no the arrow shafts are not my go to, I will just use these tent stakes and if I need them for staking the tarp down I will fall back to another style of stake, or a stick, or possibly a biner.
Why does this the phrase "The phalanges of my vanquished enemies" always the first thing that comes to mind when someone asks this question?
But seriously, I use commercially produced aluminum tube toggles cut down from arrow shafts for myself, or, when I want the setup to be totally bombproof (for my daughter), I slip a CAMP Nano Biner into the MSH.
Never thought of using one of those Nano biners! Good idea! We have new neighbors and he is opening an archery shop. I am going to ask him about carbon fiber scraps as well as aluminum. I love my mahogany ones, but I am interested in weighing them against aluminum and carbon. I want LIGHT for backpacking!!
