what are some cheap under quilts that you guys would recommend? (either down or synthetic doesent matter)
or even everyday household items that could be easily converted to an underquilt
thanks,

Arrowhead equipment has the jarbidge for around $100. There are many who have modded sleeping bags into an UQ
While it might not stand up to Ontario cold, the Poncho Liner UnderQuilt is very popular.
The no-sew version is here; scroll down to post #7 for the revised, better, version.
The sewn up version is here.
I'd rate the no-sew version at about 45* F (7* C) for warmth. The sewn version doesn't gain much in warmth unless you add insulation. With a layer of InsulBright (a mylarized fleece), I'd rate one at about 32* F (0* C) for most folks--I've been as low as 25* F (-4* C) comfortably with appropriate clothing for the temps.
Not sure about availability or costs of liners in Canada, but I get 'em for ~$20 to $30 US here, depending on quality, at the local Army/Navy surplus store. Figure ~$40 for my sewn up version, between the shock cord, cordlocks, mini 'biners, and added insulation.
An issue liner comes in at ~1.5 lbs (~0.68 kg), and adding insulation to it may bring it up to ~2 lbs (~0.9 kg). Doesn't pack down particularly well (synthetic fill never does), but it's warm and cheap.
Hope it helps!
thanks
thanks, its like -13 with the wind chill here so i wasent really expecting a cheap UQ to deal with that.
and for me it would be faster to go state side and go to an army surplus store b/c the closest Canadian surplus store is like 2-3 hrs away from me
The macentyre shamu has served me well...
Thanks for the Info I might have to start making my own gear...:):)
poncho liner is great cheap and easy warm weather u.q.
I think I've got $30 into my no sew PLUQ. Can't get much better then that.
WOW, I've been carrying my poncho liner around using it to wrap up in as a blanket when its too warm to use my modular sleep system....
I was wondering about UQs to rid the weight of the MSS....NEVER would have thought about a PLUQ.....:boggle:
I'm so making one!
Yeah...for down here, it's just about perfect. If you're looking for cheap ways to get warm, it's hard to beat 'em. One on top and one on the bottom is good for ~45*+ and comes in right at 3 lbs for ~$45 invested. Hard to find a point on the cheap/light sliding scale better'n that...
Awesome thats the kinda opinion I needed, a FL local:D
I already have one, I usually just burrito into it when I use it, but a UQ modded one is just epic.
now, to sew, or not to sew, that is the question:lol:
sewing it looks cleaner, but works about the same. no sew is WAY easier.
If you want the tq version its even easier...poke 2 holes on the bottom side of the quilt's grosgrain, thread some shock cord (or paracord)through, tie the thing together at the ties (except the top ties) and viola, you have a tq...
Brilliant! That gives a foot box!
I am so buying another one. :D
I have heard of some pepole doubling up for example taking a poncho liner and using a 3 season quilt to get them through the night. I don't know how low it will take you but it will take you pretty low.
Hey did you ever end up making a uq or tq?
