No-Knots Setup Advice?

Hey everyone,

I'm seeking some advice. I want to streamline my setup so that I don't have to tie any knots in the field. I'm notoriously bad at remembering knots, so I want to try just eliminating them entirely.

My setup includes (or will include):
Dutch clips, DIY self-tensioning tarp lines for the staking lines, figure-9s on the tarp lines that attach to the trees.

Tying knots beforehand, where I have the help of YouTube, is entirely acceptable. I'd appreciate any other knot-less ideas you all have.

The best way to remember how to tie knots is to practice and practice some more. Leave a piece of cord by your couch and practice your knots while watching TV. That being said, I like no knot setups too. That is where splicing comes in.

If you don't already have this on your tarp guy lines, you could add a prussic loop and attach that to you tarp corners. This allows you slide the prussic along the guyline for tightening the line. It also allows for adjustment from under the tarp in case you need to do so.

+1 on Prussics. Run your tarp guylines through them and attatch the Prussics to the tarp. To tighten, pull the guyline through the knot. There are many threads on HF about Prussics

I also take the approach of having the tarp ridgeline follow the hammock suspension as is demonstrated here as a general idea (without all the knots of course).


Hammock suspension - treestrap with marlinspike hitch and toggle. Deadeye of whoopie to the toggle then adjustable eye to a Dutchbiner to a continuous loop to the hammock.

Love the tarp suspension because it is knot free and easy to raise and lower the tarp without changing the location of attachment of the tarp ridgeline to the tree. Love the hammock suspension because you can have a self contained hammock separate from your suspension.

Only knot is the marlinspike.

I use a line at each end of the tarp attached to trees tightened with Flyz

Check out knot bones... I love knots but I still use these little things and they work great. They also make guyline storage really easy as you have something to wrap the guyline around before packing up.

I didn't really know that there were alternatives to figure-nines, so I'll be sure to check out the knot bones and the Dutch Flyz. Thanks a bunch! I can't wait to try some of this stuff out.
