Howdy From Texas!

I am a relatively new hanger in the Piney Woods of East Texas. I have been suffering on the ground for years now, blaming my great discomfort on global warming making the ground harder (rather than age and increased body mass). I was dreading taking my kids camping because of the misery of another night on the ground in my tent. Hairsmith had been extolling the virtues of swinging from the trees. I finally bought a Grand Trunk SBP and took the family camping over Spring Break. It was amazing! I was actually the last one up in the morning, and I awoke refreshed and relaxed for a change. We did another trip over Easter, and I will never go back to the ground!

The only "problem" is that the wife and kids want hammocks now for future trips! :)

Glad to see you made it to the forum. You just need to get the wife and kids to start reading some of the DIY forum. then all you will have to do is start ordering material. You will have the whole McBrood hainging in no time.

We do need you to get some grad student working on that, how it does trees good to have hammocks hainging from them project we talked about ! :lol:

Thanks for the welcome. I've read through The Ultimate Hang and enjoyed it and have been watching Shug videos with the family. Sorry Shug, but the humor of Minnesota mustard snot sickles is lost on Texas kids.

Thanks Hairsmith extraordinaire! We do need a research project on how hammocks make trees happier. It's just a matter of getting the funding together and finding a pro-hammocker wanting a PhD in Forestry!

Sargevining - I think I know what you mean by the "second harvest" hikes. I hiked an old familiar trail with the kids Saturday, and my legs and knees are still reminding me of it. Is that what you're referring to?

Thanks EastTex. My first exposure to an attempt at hammock camping was just south of where you are in Liberty, in the Trinity delta in the old Wallisville Reservoir site. A rather large friend hung his cheepo Wally World hammock between two cypress trees. His young son climbed aboard and it broke. Amazingly, he fell between the cypress knees or we would have taken him to the hospital. I snuggled down in the cold mud in my sleeping bag and thought, "what a dumb idea." Now I know better! It's all a matter of the right gear.

Welcome from DFW. If you have any suggestions on places for a decent weekend hang in your neck of the woods...feel free to pass them along.

Semiuseless, My favorite USFS campgrounds are Boykin Springs and Boutin Lake, in the Angelina NF south of Lufkin. You can swing over the creek below the lake at Boykin Springs. There is nothing on earth like the old longleaf pine forests! See Hairsmith's 2013 trip report on Boutin Lake.

I also love lake Ratcliff in the Davy Crockett NF but unfortunately it is still closed due to storm damage. The 4C Sawmill trail this time of year in Davy Crockett NF is East Texas at its best IMO. There are two primitive campgrounds along this trail. I have not camped on them, but I hear good things.

We should put together a behind the Pine Curtain hang once Ratcliff reopens.

Welcome from DeBerry, Texas! It's as East Texas as you can get! Only about 5 minutes from Louisiana!

I thnk Red Hill Lake may be back open. It's just north of Milam Texas about 3 miles.
There is another fantastic location for a haing just outside of Nacogdoches. It's in some grand old growth bottom land. I have also herd it's in the works for a new research program to begin there, that will prove that trees enjoy having hammocks haing from them. Right now it might be best to use stealth hanging tecsneeks. But I may have some inside pull with powers in the know. The Steven F. Austin Expermintal Forest would make a great group haing, and would help with this research project. :D:D:D:lol::lol:

I'm glad to hear Red Hills Lake is reopening. It is a great camping and swimming spot and I can't, wait to hang there. It seems like all of the best USFS spots have been closed way too on here in East Texas.

But I am not a hiker ( hiker is an old Indian name, it means one with broken motorcycle ) :cool:
And I am sure I would not make many friends sliding up into camp on my dusty and mud incrusted motor bike.
I do plan to make some of the Texas hangs, but I make a living on my feet so when I am not working I try to stay off them as much as I can.

How about a delayed reaction "howdy and welcome!"?

Somehow I missed this thread until now. Glad to see more Texas hangers. If you haven't checked out the info on the Texas Fall Hang in a couple of weeks, take a look, there are plenty of trees and we'd be glad to have you along.
