FL LWRSF "Let's try this one more time" hang

Alright... another quick and dirty trip planned at the original site for this past fall's hang that got flooded out. It is high and dry and should be perfect for this hang! The site is next to a creek so there is a water source and plenty of bugs. It is a 30-40 minute hike in from parking. If you would rather canoe/kayak in then that is a possibility but you will have to make arrangements for shuttling back from the take out spot at the north end of the lake at the county campground. I will get some gps coordinates for the trailhead, the turn to the camp site, the county campground, and the camp site. I'm too busy at the moment but should have them next week.

The site is reserved for February 24-26 but I'm not planning on showing up until after work (I should be at the trailhead by 5:30-5:45) on Friday but you are welcome to make your way in earlier in the day if you would like. I will lead people in at 9 a.m. Saturday morning if you are coming Saturday and want a guide (I will need a hard confirmation on this since I would prefer to not have to hike out and back if nobody shows). I can't promise that I'll be showing up after work on Friday since we are already in a fairly bad fire season and I can't be positive that I'll get off work at a normal hour.

It will be primitive camping so bring everything you need. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get any firewood but I will give it my best. I will most likely do a hike on Saturday like last time (minus getting lost) and take everyone down to the lake and to the amazing cypress trees that I showed the last group. I'll probably be leaving around noon on Sunday. I will still probably have a hang on a different area in late March or April so this isn't the last one down here.

Olddog already started a thread for this I think. Unfortunately Timberrr and I are committed already that weekend. We are taking our church youth group camping that weekend. Otherwise we would have been in!

The girls and I are planning to walk out to this campsite and have a look around on Saturday. I will take alot of pics of prospective hanging site locations there and post when we get back saturday evening. Any help needed I will be able to assist as this is 10-15 minutes from my house.

Cant wait to hang out with everyone again.

I will probably leave work on Friday after lunch. With a 3 hour drive, will arrive before dark.
I'll plan on leaving mid-day on Sunday.

The girls won't be making this trip. I can get some much needed mileage done on this trip. I don't know if anyone is wanting to hike during the day Saturday, or what activities we may plan, but for now if there's nothing else planned, I will probably plan a nice 8-12 mile day that day.

Any other ideas???

I enjoy hiking, maybe a bit shorter distance. Sightseeing 5-6 miles. I was thinking BaseCamp Friday & Day-Hike Saturday.

Shorter is fine with me too. I will bring my map of this area and we can figure out one of the loops that will yield the best scenery.

I should be able to make this. But I will be arriving at the trail-head around 7:45pm after I get out of work. And I have absolutely no problem with that at all. :cool:

That's along the lines of what I was shooting for. Probably a trip out to the cypress trees (not to be missed) and then backtrack along the trail to the camp.

You definitely have to see the cypress trees.... better than anything Disney has to offer!

Had Mountain Man Breakfast for dinner tonight. Is that strange? No my wife, daughter and granddaughter wondered what it was. Won't be hauling as much water this trip. Maybe my little DO can make the trip.

I have a pump filter anyone is welcome to use while out there. It works very good.
I agree the cypress trees along the lake are awesome. I usually see turkeys on the trail and sometimes some racoons looking for muscles along the banks.
Should be nice.

Definitely registering interest for at least Saturday. I might be able to get Saturday off, Friday is less likely.

We'll see as the date approaches...

It looks like I may be free that weekend and I would like to get back up to Lake Arbuckle. I will try to schedule this in.

I'm pretty much planning a primitive weekend. Very basic hot water meals. I plan on being as simplified as possible. But I will bring my camera to see those cypress trees everyone raves about. And, speaking of unique cypress trees... How about the Senator catching fire and collapsing this past weekend. 3500 year old!!?? Very sad affair.

Atleast it was from natural causes so to say, a lightning strike??? That was pretty fitting end to the tree instead of arson or bugs eating it rotten. All in all, a sad day and everyone who has been to see the tree will cherrish the memory of experiencing the feeling of standing at the bottom and looking up at it's beauty.......

Pretty much what I had in mind. Just enough hiking and sightseeing to work up a good nights sleep.

I'm bringing only my tiny little Bushcooker Lt1 with Grizly Adam's tiny little alky stove as an insert. I won Grizz's stove at the Florida Hang raffle. Unless of course it's raining cats & dogs: then I'll bring the Emberlit ti with a gallon of gasoline :scared: :lol:

So while Islander and I were being forced to relax, enjoy a beautiful view, a nice campfire, and the noise (frogs, crickets, and owls were all competing for the microphone) I discussed a couple of ideas for this hang. I would like a little feedback but will probably go ahead with both if there is even a small bit of participation (I think Islander is already in).

1. After seeing all of the garbage that has washed ashore I decided to offer everyone the chance to help us out and pick up trash during our hike along the lake shore. I'll bring garbage bags and in exchange for your labor I am offering up free admission for the weekend ($2/person/day).

2. I can sherpa in my DO on Friday morning and stash it near the camp site and if everyone pitches in to buy/carry in some of the fixin's then we can have mountain man breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is only about a 45 minute hike (about 2 miles) to get to the camp site so I'm also probably going to bring in my camp chair so that I'm extra comfortable while I'm out there (I'll also bring plenty of bug spray)

I'll probably do #1 either way... of those that are definitely coming, what do you think about the second idea?

• Create a new album
• Upload a picture
• Navigate to your new album (where your picture is) and click on the picture
• There will be a web address link or you can use the BB code that you can cut and paste into a message here

For video you will need to upload it to youtube (create an account if you haven't already), get the "share" address for the video, then in your post here click on the youtube button. Paste the end portion of the address (get rid of the http://youtu.be/ part) and then you should be good to go. If you can't get that part then you can just paste the address to the video and someone will do it for you.

I was going to bring the lid in Friday morning so don't need to worry about that. A half a bag should be fine for two MM breakfasts (as long as you aren't talking about small bags :lol: ) but it will need to be instant light or we will need to hope that we have a campfire or someone bring in a chimney starter.

So we have:

• DO and two liners (samsara)
• Charcoal (Shannan)

and we'll need:

• Eggs (how many per breakfast... 18-24?)
• Sausage or some kind of meat x2
• a couple of onions
• a couple of peppers
• Shredded cheese x2

Am I forgetting anything?

Was already thinking of bringing the 10" DO for some peach cobbler. Got the walker and will just leave the O2 bottle at home. I'll be breathing good fresh air anyway.:D

I hope we have a campfire. I found a knot of lighter and stashed it close by so starter won't be needed. I can bring a small bag of good coal. I think I will bring a pound of spicy ground sausage to add to the breakfast or cook seperate if not everyone likes spicy.

I'm pretty sure that tortillas and salsa will last for about 47 years in your car before going bad :)

Looks like we might have everything covered! Medium salsa should work and I'll probably throw in a bottle of Texas Pete's Garlic hot sauce for those that want some oomph

Yeah, kind of a new paradigm isn't it? "You snooze you win" :lol:

I have some extra charcoal I might have you carry in (I need to use it up anyway) just to make sure that we have plenty, but the firewood offer is perfect. If there is one thing that I need on a weekender it would be a campfire :)
