AND uncomfortable!
There are 1.1 hammocks out there and they are fine if you're a skinny person. That pretty much leaves me out of that arena.
1.1 oz silnylon is perfect for a tarp.
1.1 oz dwr is doable for a hammock if you're careful. Silnylon isn't breathable so it's not so good for a hammock, but it doesn't really make a difference if you're using a pad anyway. The 1.1 oz dwr I used for the hammock stretched so much it gave me shoulder squeeze, though.
i recently got some polyester fabric from owf by mistake. they said it was nylon, but it's not. it is 1.5oz/yd, and is about the color of southern white pine (needles). anyway, i really like it. it stretches way way less than 1.9 (this is a double 1.5 layer hammock though) anyway, it seems to make a noticeable difference. the benefits of less stretch are: my but sinks less compared to my head and feet, resulting in a signifigantly flatter lay, and less shoulder suqeeze. i have not compared single layer 1.5 poly to single layer 1.9 nylon, but the double 1.5 has the flatest lay and least shoulder squeeze of any end gathered hammock i have ever tried. i was able to lay on my side without having to resort to the fetal position due to hip torque. it really was a signifigant diff, just thought i would share.
How good would a tarp be out of the 1.5 poly? I could score tons of black or gray at Walmart in the $1 bin, but didn't think it would do as well as sil for a tarp.
the 1.5 poly i am talking about is breathable, and would work poorly for a tarp, lightweight waterproof polyester would probably work well, less stretch could be an advantage for a tarp, lots of tent rainflies are poly for that reason i'm sure.
