What is the difference between a thread injector and a sewing machine?

I was looking at a post asking people for pics of their thread injectors, and it seems that there are some very serious machine nuts on here. Looked like 48 posts when I last checked. Anyway, I get it that it is desirable to be able to sew through some heavy materials or layers, but are all thread injectors sewing machines, but some sewing machines not thread injectors? My girlfriend generally won't let me touch her sewing machines, and rarely will sew anything for me unless I beg...people really are nuts about their machines...:eek: I was looking online for info about thread injectors but mainly just came up with results for sewing machines.

Thread injectors is slang for sewing machine sounds less femanine for the guys that sew lol

also don't forget fabric welding. That is another term you may come upon.

There the same end of story. You have two options as I see it (1) buy your own machine as I did or (2) learn the power of the chocolate covered strawberries with champagne for the really involved sewing project. You could get her out for a night with the girls and sneak in and use hers behind her back, but you will need the strawberries, chocolate and some really nice flowers if your caught. So number (1) is best option IMHO.

I use a Bench Top Thread Injector, not a sewing machine.:D

I hand thread inject. :lol: How cheekie is that? Don't have a machine and what little sewing I do is all by hand. (I can see this posting being misconstrued and deleted) :lol: I would say, get your own machine as yu might start a war at home of using hers. :)

It's funny, when I first came here, I thought the same thing, googled it and everything... hahaha...

Making me laugh!

It's funny I went to my church last night where there is a quilting group that meets every Thursday night. I needed the room because I am making a winter tarp for my wife. So I go in there with the tread injector, a 25' carpenters tape measurer, a sheet rock t- square. I mean talk about clampets coming to town setup. They were giving me a hard time (all in jest) about sewing. And that is where I came out with men don't sew, we thread inject. That got all of them laughing.

By the way, "PTI" is the recognized abbreviation for one. If you don't believe me, look it up. ;)

I use a home grade fabric welder... I have no idea what a sewing machine is :D

Ha, you think that's something, I use a 120 Volt, digital, multi-adjustible, variable feed rate, dual thread interlacer!

I use a old Singer 301 thread injector I bought from a little old lady at the antique fair. It's odd though, she didn't seem like the fabric welding, gear making type. I'm not sure why she had it. :lol::lol:

I should probably keep my big mouth shut but honestly I find absolutely no shame whatsoever being a guy that sews. This guy also knits a fantastic hat, socks, afghans, and sweaters. This guy also crochets afghans and hats. What else does this guy do? Lots of things that sexists consider feminine traits. I can also cook wonderful gourmet meals. Plus I am a pianist! But I don't think you would ever call me feminine if you met me. I'm quite masculine. And oh, by the way, get your history books out and do some research if you disagree with me but most of the things 20th Century colloquially considered female or male is actually merely a 20th Century consideration. Knitting, by the way, was invented by males. Weaving and knitting and tailoring and sewing were all male jobs/roles previous to the 20th Century. I just wanted to share that so that the fence straddler might have more gusto when he says "I sewed it myself!".

As one of the guys who was here when the term was coined... It had nothing to do with gender roles per se. The tactic at hand was to help some guys get ver a somewhat what irrational fear of the sewing machine. The way some of us addressed that was by drawing a direct connection to something all "guys" are supposed to understand... power tools. Because after all, if you can handle a 10" bladee saw why should one be worried about a simpler and really less dangerous machine.. the sewing machine. So a gear powered thread injector became the "power tool" of choice.

Now there are, in my perspective, some differences betwwn and thread injector and a modern day sewing machine. The thread injector is used for making gear pretty much exclusively. All you need is the most basic stitches and adjustments. "Sewing machines" go beyond the basics to stretch stitches, mock over lock, blind hemmers and real true basting stitches as well and decorative and embroidery stitches like duckies and kitties and folwer for decorative hems and such.

But use your own terminology and just make your gear.

That's right! I tried running some silnylon through my bandsaw and it didn't go very well. The stuff won't hold nails worth a darn! :rolleyes:

Glad I found this thread. Cleared up a few things. My wife hasn't touched her sewing machine in 10 years but still forbids me from touching it until I suggested I might purchase something newer and nicer...she changed her tune at the thought of getting a new one and embracing the hand-me-down process

Heh... if she hasn't touched it in 10 years what does she need a new one for? hehehe... I say you get the new gear machine and let her be jealous. Yeah... I know it don't work that way. But whats the point of having a good piece of equipment sit around unused. :)

A lot of this sounds like how I ended up getting my own thread injector/sewing machine with all of the extra decorative stitches and embroidery and so forth. My wife has a mid/high-end Brother machine, and when I got interested in learning to sew, she was very hesitant, saying that her machine was a bit too advanced to learn on. I then proceeded to talk her into letting me get my current machine which ended up costing just as much as hers, but I traded the number of functions for reported durability. As I like to put it, my machine is the work horse, while my wife's machine is the trick pony.

EDIT: Oh, and as a side note, I tell people I sew all the time, and I rarely get any grief about being a guy that sews.

I use "making gear" on the forums because it helps focus attention and discussion on what it is we do here. I think there is a difference between "sewing" and "making gear" in that one is a subset of the other. We don't get into set-in sleeves and raglan sleeves. We don't get into plackets, tailored linings and french cuffs. We don't get into a whole lot of stuff that is part of the overall "sewing" experience. That's not a bad thing. Advanced sewing is a high set of skills that includes altering patterns for fit and a variety of other things. Not be over simplify the gear making process but just about any one can learn to make gear. So I find the distinction useful in that regard. Again it has nothing to do with gender identity or insecurity. It has to do with focus.

I agree with Rev's comments above, however...

There is a LOT of good info on sewing machines (the machines, not the techniques for sewing with them) here at HF. Repair, tune-up, recommendations, reviews, etc. are all here but much of that info is hidden from folks who are doing internet searches with the keywords 'sewing machine' because some folks persist with the somewhat tired joke of 'thread injector'.

I make a point of using the term 'sewing machine' for that reason.

I use a sewing machine to sew gear. :)
