Got out for an overnighter on Thursday ... my wife had all her girlfriends coming over so I bailed. Carelessly tossed gear in the Catalyst and took off for a local State Park.... Afton ....only 30 minutes away.
On this video I take a vow of silence .... other than a few m-m-m-'s, ahh's and slurps. Quite a departure for me. It was a quiet trip and I was in a quiet mood and wanted to listen to the piney woods speak. I could hear the breeze whisper through the trees. Windy and cold it were out there. Down to around 28º on the bluff. Sometimes I just like to hear the "sound" of gear being used. Know what I mean?
Here I show my DIY hammock, DIY Dri-Ducks Weathershield and the WarbonnetGuy style of adjustable UnderQuilt with shockcord channels. Great system! I snoozed like Rip Van Winkle in the hammock. In the hammock by 9:00PM and up a couple of times to enjoy the sounds of Coyotes whupping it up in the forest. cool. Wild Turkeys everywhere too.
Cook a couple of meals with my MiniBullDesign Krazy Cooking Kit. Tested my MBD Waterlight ... a couple of plastic pop bottles and a candle. Water between the layers to keep the plastic from melting. Brighter than my tea candle lantern although a wee bit bulkier. I made it ...I use it.
'Preciate you watching. Enjoy my quietude ... for once.
looks good. You wrote you were using a 1/2 down underquilt. Whats the other half made of ;)

Another great one Shug
Your videos never get old man! I loved it. You always seem to come up with another angle the next show. Easy to see how you can do if for a living. Does your show ever take you to the central Ohio area? I would definitely come see one!

I could hear 'em
Shug---loved the sounds of the geese and the looks of a slumbering woodland! Those temps you were in---my favorites. Cool enough so that you need gear to stay warm at rest, but warm enough to not have to completely bundle over. There's nothing like being comfortably warm in an environment where it is otherwise uncomfortably cool. Guess that's the Minnesotan in me peeking out.
You might bill this as a tranquil traipse, but I could hear those "Whoo Buddy!"'s every time you thought them.

Nicely done again shugster! Always anticipating a new video when going onto YouTube. How do you pack your catalyst. After watching your video on your warming up trek you showed all your gear , but man how'd you pack all that and get it to fit. Food bottom or hammock bottom I'm curios. Teach me oh great hiking master. My glass is empty for your wisdom.

Always fun to see your videos. Got a chuckle when you showed the swiss miss packet.
Just curious if you are mainly a solo hiker? Does the family do any hikes or hangs?
Also, any entertaining on the schedule for northern Illinois or therebouts?

Swiss Miss is funny ain't it? Yes, i am mainly a solo hiker ... gets my groove going that piney wood solitude. My wife and daughter just let me go... they know I love it so and come home a better man. My wife will "Cadillac Camp" at a Good Campground if I do all the cooking and stuff but not too much anymore.
No Illinois gigs right now ... Wish so. Thanks for the interest though.....

DIY water bottle attachment on ULA Catalyst

I also have a ULA Catalyst and the water bottles fall off the (shoulder strap) bottle holsters on downhills. This is the only niggle I have with this otherwise well-designed, rugged, yet lightweight pack.
I see the water bottle on the hip belt around 5:50. Would you post a close up of that custom attachment? Perhaps with a DIY explanation?
Much obliged, Shug.

When I get home to my "Man-Shed" in a week I will do that.
Basically it is a water bottle holder that I just sewed a nylon loop/strap onto to slip over the hipbelt. That is it!!!!
Remind me in a week if you need.

Great video! I really enjoy watching your vids and get a kick out of your viewpoint on things. Thanks for sharing with us!
This evening I was showing my wife info on all the hammocks I'm considering for purchase as my first camping hammock, and we ended up watching several of your vids. She really enjoyed them, and ended with "He's a silly man, isn't he?" :)
Again, thanks for sharing!

re undershield, I have a nanatuk (modified down) uq, rather than a separate undershield, I sewed a very light weight cuben .33 oz/yd sheet to the underside of the uq (about a 2/3 uq) so no separate set up, gnome
