I've attached a few images of where I would ideally like to hang in my bedroom:
Attachment 9082
Attachment 9083Attachment 9084 on the sides I would attach a little bracket or hook for the rope to go through to keep the hammock ends apart. (See last picture)
Attachment 9085 This beam is obviously a support beam so nice and solid and will be able to hold my weight
And here is a rough ms paint drawing of what I'm considering:
Attachment 9086
My thinking is that the beam up top will take most of the weight and the side hooks will be there to keep the hammock spread apart and take a bit less weight than if I just attached straight onto the walls and not the top beam.
Thoughts/comments?
Your distance looks a little small. Most hammocks are 9 feet long and bigger. Whats the measurement?? But the area you described should work. Doorways like that are "usually built" with double 2x4's or 2x6's.
You could custom build a hammock to fit the space, just make it from wide 60" fabric, and lay sideways/asymmetrical in it.
I don't see the need for the upper set of eyebolts, shouldn't need them IMO.
edit....pre-drill a small hole to be sure its solid lumber for 3-4 inches first. If it is, bore it out a 1/8 inch smaller than your bolts and install. Make sure there are no water pipes in behind the wall.:scared::cursing::crying
I agree, that distance looks too short.
I use window frames and door jams for the location of my lag eye bolts. quick and easy to install and simple and quick to stow or deploy. I have several setups around my house. the one in my home office I use everyday to watch tv in and for naps.
the distance is 7'3" I currently have my bed in the gap and there is still a 1 foot gap to the wall. My hammock is max 8'2" so the hammock ends could be right up against the wall and then the sag might take that extra foot of length or is that a bit unrealistic?
My other option is that I could come out from that frame to have more room on the left, that would give me 9'8" and I could still go to that door frame on the right and then come out to the 2nd stud on the left wall.
This is making me crazy...what many people are describing as eye bolts are not bolts at all, but rather, screw eyes.
Anybody have any ideas on the relative holding power of bolts v. screws? I've always wondered...
Assuming the round stock of the eye bolt and eye screw is the same, the eye bolt is potentially far stronger if it is backed with a washer of serious size. That spreads the forces out over a greater surface area. The metal to metal threading is much stronger than the metal to wood of the eye screw. But I am not an engineer so I can't even begin to suggest how much stronger it would be.
If available I'd go for a load bearing or external wall and use an eye shield anchor into the stone :) If the room is in the corner of the house you'll be able to use the two external walls.
If it were me, and its not, I would try the 9'8" area. You want some sag in your hammock for the best comfort. Your suspension (ropes) can then be adjusted longer or shorter for best comfort for you. During the daytime, you can unhook the hammock from one eyebolt and hang the hammock from the other. Get's it out the way, quick and simple.
8'-2" sounds really short for hammock, might want to upgrade to something longer and wider. my 2 cents
here's my office setup (today),
using a window and door jam for my eye lag bolts.
who needs a couch when you have a hammock?!
