Smokies Trip Jan 2013

Roche, Spam, and Wisenber let me tag along on some of Roche's 900 miles of the Smokies. We did a 3 day 2 night on the trail. The first night was in the teens and the second night 32*, rain, rolling fog, and snow dripping from trees. Everybody stayed warm and dry. I was impressed with Roche's HH SS setup that he used in the teens, Wisenber hiking in at night, and Spam's Hindu Karl Childress impressions:D.

By the way Spam put us to shame with his small pack and one good looking hammock setup with a BIAS hammock and a matching UQ from a vendor I know.:)

Here are a few short clips of our trip. I did not get any hammock camp video but everyone is a HF member so it is sort of hammock related:) Honestly it was one of those trips where I had to concentrate on the hike and was tired at camp so the video suffered. I hated to just delete it so here are the tidbits.

Great video as always hangnout. That was an awesome trip, and thank you for the silence on just what all we had to do for Roche........shudder.....that part aside we need to do it again soon....and I want that fat guys pack! Fortunately you only got video of my more graceful stream crossings:D

Ahhhh.......Smokies. That looked like an OHM Spam was wearing. If-so, good pack.

Me too! Mine is an older OHM with lotsa miles on it.
You can for sure get a lot in them.

Ha! Indeed you can. I have viewed yours on many occasions. The side pockets are great and the back pocket is an absolute golden stretchy cavern!

Looks like a good time. I'd love to do some hiking in the snow. Is your all in one set up like MedicineMan's with a sock?

Wish I could! Plan on making it down this spring and over to Linville Gorge as well

Me and the wife has been talking all week when we can get down to the Smokies, Tenn, and NC in mid April..can't wait,,but have about 14 trade shows between now and then and will be ready for sure for the green jungle and mts. Great trip and nice video..keep em coming. :)

I felt better after "recycling" my stomach contents on the way down to the first nights camp. :) The rest of the trip was rehydrating and better each day.

My setup is similar to MM's but without the SEEP. It has been working really well.

Thanks guys, I started not to do anything with the clips but enjoyed the trip and hiking with these guys and wanted to show some friends the first day scenes with the snow covering everything.

Thanks for posting and thanks for joining us on the hike. With little sleep, over 250 miles of driving, a sausage biscuit that fought with you for 4.8 miles of uphill, you still took video - outstanding. That was only topped by wisenber's night hike into camp, amazing. Luckily Spammie survived the hike unscathed, taking care of us old guys.

So, when do we do the next one?

Excellent trip report. Beautiful trail that Snake Den, it's on our list. Sorry about the arm...I'd trade ribs for it at the moment. Didn't see Wisenber-sure he was there? Thanks for doing the vid while feeling puny, need more vids from you HNO! Roce and Spam looked like ballerinas on the creek crossing :)

What happened to your ribs?

The night hiker Count Baron von Wisenber's image rarely appears on video taken during daylight.

But did we at least look like manly ballerinas?

Looked like a great trip indeed.

Hope the arm is feeling better and that ULA was indeed packed very small for a trip like this...

I really think he is a vampire, his image is not recordable:) That night hike was a great feat for a lowly human but he probably flew up.

We almost had to rename the falls on Snake Den Ridge trail to "Spam Falls" Luckily that last little ledge was there:scared: Wisenber made it across by moonlight.

Thanks for the concern b2r. Just after Spamburglar and I reached the AT, I slipped on ice and my wrist took the brunt of it. Plenty of "vitamin I" took the edge off and my buddies helped me out. Ten days later it was still sore just above the wrist so I went to the doctor. Luckily the x-rays were negative.

The stream crossings are far less intimidating when they're not fully visible.:lol:

I do recall one crossing that did not appear to have a clear route that would avoid wading as the temps were hovering in the teens and the hair on top of my head was a block of ice. Just as the phrase "This is really going to suck!" went through my mind, I did see a way to pull it off.

Most of my Saturday was spent well behind the filming as a constantly pondered how I could have made the same hike with about 15 pounds less in my pack!

That sure is purdy country. Looks like you all had a great trip.
