long term sleeping in a hammock?

im a brand new member, this is my first post, thanks for the hospitality.

me and my brother just bought a house, a foreclosure. He makes mad money but i, unfortuantly, dont.

I could pull the bed from my parents house/current room and put it in my new room but i dont really want to, which is where the question comes in, and you guessed it: Can i hang a hammock in my room and just sleep on that?

I asked a paintball forum this same question and people said after 2 weeks i'd wake up looking like a banana, something i dont want to do. Is there a type of hammock that i could hang to prevent this or is this totally out of the question.

Im defiantly going for the pirate flare. If you watch the Pirates movies you can spot them sleeping on hammocks and hey, if they did it (theoretically), cant I?

and btw, the house is in a neighboring city of Palm Springs, CA. almost 1,500 sq ft. Pool, Jacuzzi, Fireplace. we got it for 185. Shizam!

I've been sleeping in a hammock on my diy frame for 3 months now. Beats my futon, the canvas I made it out of has stretched a little... I should make one out of a tighter weave, and something wider than 60" might be better

i've been sleeping in a hammock since early 2005 & i don't look like a banana... i don't think<G>.
as you read here, you'll find that you can sleep near flat or perfectly flat, depending on the hammock you choose & how you use it.
part of it depends on the hammock design & part of it on the way you hang it.

any hammock that is comfy for one night will be comfy for many nights. if i was single i would sleep in one every night too. several here do.

try a hammock like the eagles nest double or the trecklight double, or get a good mayan hammock with a fine weave. at least 60" wide x 9-10 feet long would be fine. hang it with lots of sag (so the support lines are aprox. 45 degree angle) then to avoid the banana position, lie diagonally rather than straight, this allows you to lie quite flat, and is the reason you need the 60" or more width. you might try putting a small pillow under your knees if you feel there isn't enough support there, and maybe a very small travel or neck pillow for your head. a regular bed pillow will be way too big, and some don't need a pillow at all.

you can look at the manufactuers section of this forum to find eagles nest, trecklight and others. go for it, i wake up less times throughout the night in my hammock than i do on my memory foam matress.

yeah as slowhike might tell you, you can lay straight rather than diagonal, but you have to hang the hammock very tightly rather than very loosely. most hang loose (lots of sag/45 degree support ropes) and lay diagonally, but if you do want to try laying straight, you will have to hang the hammock differently to do so (much tighter)

yeah, but that doesn't make it flat, it's like that anyway. try hanging with fairly little sag and laying mostly straight, you will see. you get the least shoulder squeeze this way too, it's a different feeling, definately worth trying.

Full time hammock sleeper since Feb. of 07 and LOVING IT! I love having my back and knees NOT hurt in the mornings. Look at some of the Brazillian hammocks, they are uber comfy for nightly sleeping.

yeah, i do use one of the thicker inflatables & use it only partly inflated.
i think that only plays a part in "flat sleeping" by fine tuning it after other measures have been taken...
1)... lots of sag & laying on the diagonal, or
2)... a tighter hang that stretches the hammock closer to strait.
the tighter hang does put a lot more stress on the hammock & it's supports as well as the attachment points (trees, eye bolts, or whatever).
and when i'm on my back, i still find myself using some "diagonal" in my lay sometimes.

here's another colorado hammock company, go for the double hammock. these are made out of lightweight nylon fabric instead of woven string, much lighter and more packable and cheaper. good quality though.

Get a Trek Light double. Inside you (presumably) don't need the bug net, so you can just enjoy how nice it feels. The Eno double is the same hammock.

Have been sleeping in a hammock for 8 months. Love it, no sore shoulders no sore back. Once you get one it won't be long before hangin outside will sound like a great idea to you so I would get one that can do both. All the brands metioned before work great with that dual purpose in mind. Welcome to your new addiction. Costs little to build a stand for inside and there are helpful instructions in HF.

i have put eyebolts in the celing rafters to hang from, but you have to get them in just the right spot so the amount of sag will be what you want and your hammock will be the right height off the floor. a stand might not be a bad idea, you would be able to play with different amounts of sag, it would be totally adjustable.

a brazillian might not be a bad idea either, if it's cool enough in the house to need a blanket, your backside might get cool, you could lay on something like a fleece blanket, but doing this is kind of a wrestling match to get it under you comfortably. the brazillians are usually made of a thicker fabric which would have some insulating property of it's own, probably enough for inside sleeping, this way you only need a blanket on top of you. if you did want to go backpacking with a hammock it would be cheap enough to spend 30$ on one of the trecklights or eno's.

I started hammocking in 03 inorder to camp near the backcountry trail work I did as a ranger ... in the Olympics that's ave 3-4 hours per day swinging a D-ring, clearing trails, rock work, digging outhouse holes etc. IOW pretty hard stooped over work.

It is impossible to describe the higher quality rest and body recuperation, IMHO also spine therapy, a hammer provides.

One of the wilderness volunteers is a physical therapist who takes summers off to work in the wild. She got in my Speer, got a huge grin on her face and in a few days ordered 2 Hennesseys .. one for her Dr husband too.

sorry to resurrect an old thread, im planning on finally ordering my hammock today, but since i havent a clue about hammocks and you guys are the experts, im coming here.

I want something neat and colorful. Im 19 years old and a lot of people are gonna walk in my room and go "Whoa! A hammock!" I'm not going to disapoint them by having a boring blue hammock, so that is a factor but not a huge one.

I've got it done, by your sugestions and recomendations, to these ones. Price isnt a huge deal, i havent really a problem spend ~$100 if the extra money is really going to be worth it.

ecquadorian hammock? I've got a friend leaving in about a week for a long term missions trip down in ecquador. I think it'd be neat if i slept in an ecquadorian hammock so i dont forget about her while she's down there. If its not suitable for long term sleeping though, forget it.

Im super open to sugestions. if someone plopped down a link and said "get this one, you'll love it" i will most likely be buying it. I Dont really know what im looking for when buying a hammock so any and every input you guys give is greatly appreciated.

Im most likely going to hang i-bolts from the ceiling, bring chain down and then just chain it up that way. Is that doable? is there some other way i should do it? I think the room may be a tad small for a stand, but again, i aint know crap about hanging.

make your own.... there are instructions in related articles on this site. You can get whatever colors float your boat. They are not hard to do if you can sew at all. Or have someone who does sew.

i have eye bolts in the celing of our spare bedroom. it's a pretty small room, but i hang from corner to corner. the eyebolts are~ 87" high and 17' apart if that helps. it is harder though because you have to get the anchor in just the right spot or you won't be able to set it up right. have someone hold the other end of the hammock. you can both hold the end of the ropes, and hold it all the way up to the celing. make sure hammock has the sag you want and is the proper height off the floor and just mark those spots on the celing.

you can tie the ropes directly to the anchors you install, or if you want a lower connection point which you probably do, just use the rope you use for the hammock support rope and tie a caribiner to it. attach your hammock support line to the biner with a clove hitch or a slipped clove hitch.

i did a spotty room of measuring the room last night but it should work out. i'll probably be going from a corner to a wall side, skipping the next corner. i'll let you guys know how it works out

Maybe it's too late to modify your house to include hammocks; in Brasil ( I lived there for awhile ) not only are the big ol' cotton hammocks huge, for diagonal if not perpendicular sleeping, there are little boxes about every 5 feet, or so, apart along the walls. These boxes usually have some chain anchored and jammed in them. Typically the family has a bunch of hammocks stored; when the party starts to wind down, out come the hammocks where you hook yourself up and things resume more horizontally. That's how I was introduced to hammocks. Wish I could find those little boxes here in the states.

a sleep in a selfmade speer type hammock for 2 years now. almost every night, unless my girlfriend is in the house. no banana looks.

i don´t think i´ll move back to bed if i´m alone.

The REI hammock stand (the Byer Vario) was cited on GreatBackyards.com as the metal hammock stand to use for hammocks without spreader bars (like the ENO double).

I have some interest in doing this myself. I've been sleeping on the floor for a few years now (well, sans bed, anyway - I have a mattress topper on the floor) and I'm intrigued by perhaps setting up a hammock in my bedroom.

I have the Byer Vario stand and like it.

What is everyone doing for bottom insulation? Right now I am laying on a fleece blanket. I am thinking about either making a fleece hammock or putting my UQ on it. Although my UQ's have a permenat funk about them.

Have you tied soaking your underquits in soapy water in the tub, then carefully transporting it to the washing machine in a clothes basket to protect the baffle stitching?

I usually just use one of the insulated air mats in the house, but sometimes I use an underquilt.

Wally World sells a product called "Sports Wash" in the sporting goods department. It does a pretty good job of getting rid of odors and funk from fabrics. It says it is formulated to be safe for down as well. I am very pleased with this product.

I had the same concern, but I eventually had to wash my most used UQ when the 'funk' became overpowering. After washing/drying, I used some of the DWR spray to revive the coating, and I've been more than pleased with the results.

I've done some research on this recently. DWR fabrics (like eVent, Goretex) have their beading ability impeded by particles that come from general use; they get dirty. Washing them with detergent isn't a good idea, but stuff like Nikwax Tech Wash will clean the garment and hence restore it to near new performance. Things like Nikwax TX-Direct Wash-in will apply a DWR coat to a garment.

I haven't personally used any of this stuff, but I've noticed my Go-Lite Wizard jacket is suffering from sub-par performance and so I did some homework. I figure I'll throw it in the wash without detergent prior to getting the Tech Wash to see if that helps any. I don't believe I've washed it in the year+ I've had it.

This stuff from WM does so a good job of raising the loft on fleece and my polypro long johns. haven't compared it with anything else but it does remove odors which is the reason I got it in the first place.

I've always hung my hammock, inside, in the wall studs, heavy duty eye bolt/screw....hangs better for me..

Have you tried Woolite ?

It isn't a detergent and so doesn't dissolve oils. Great for wool - only thing I use for my Merino wool.

Seems that it might work for DWR also.
