Another use for Dutch's amazing little biner.

That's the system I've used and am using and it has worked great for me.
I do like the titanium biner addition though!
Way to go Sarge!
I'm not totally sold on the tube.
I keep the tube tied very much the same way with the line and rock bag and it sits fine (so far - **** jinx)!
Maybe something that was a little fat on the ends, like a NiteIze bone knot thing. That way it wouldn't slip out of the hitch as you raised it?
Always teaching us Rock-thanks!
Only problem I'd see for me is holding 4-5 days food weight as you thread through the hole in the little pvc tube...does it try to cut through the skin on your hand?
Well what I do when I haul one up is I use a marlin spike as a pull point and walk with it until it gets high enough, then I step on the spike while I get a new position on the cord. But doing some thinking after this discussion and playing with some other hardware here at the house I've got an even better idea than the tube that I plan to try in the daylight tomorrow and if it works will save all sorts of hassle. If it works I'll post it. And if it works, it is impossibly simple.
This works well. Ever since Josh demonstrated this same tube with the hole in it technique in early 2010 and I've been using it since. I keep the PVC tube on the bear line so I don't lose it.
Great video SGT! We been making and using a very similar system BDTRLB (Before Dutch Ti Ridge line Biner) but you and Dutch have made it a little more special :D
I found a mo' better way of doing it. This is so simple it should be illegal.

SWEET SARGE ... way to adapt and improvise!

Sarge,
Simply excellent! My current bear bag system I am using your idea of stripped out paracord and was thinking of switching to Zing-it since it has the slippery coating and will haul over branches with less resistance. But was worried the the small diameter would be more difficult to grasp and haul. Have you noticed any difficulties?
What is the total weight of the cuben sack, line, biner, & stake bag(empty)?
Again, excellent engineering!
I stopped using stripped para cord years ago. It had a tendency to stretch on me as I was trying to lift a heavy load.
The cuben sack is 25 grams, the line is 18 grams for 50', the biner is 2 grams, the stake bag is 3 grams, and the bone knot is 4 grams. Total is 52 grams, which is 1.83 ounces. That said, I've got an idea to carry 2 bone knots since they make a great hand hold for raising the bag and they are easier to get on and off than a stick on a marlin spike hitch. That way I can put one on there and pull it until I get it up as high as I need it, then jump the bones one over the other until I walk up to where I want to make the final placement. I'll practice this and see if it works out better. So if you carry an extra bone, that would be 56 grams, or 1.98 ounces.
I'm also going to paint them bright orange or something. It is hell finding one when you drop it in leaves.
Yes, I think double bones might be easier then the stick as it looked awkward but stepping on it to hold while placing the bones seemed to work well.
I am currently using the Granite Gear Air ZippSack Pack, 16L size, at 48 gm, a small Granite Gear stuff sack for tent stakes & line (toss bag). The Air ZippSack allows access to the contents without dumping everything out and has an attached loop perfect for the haul line.
I will watch the thread to see how your experiments evolve.
Thanks for sharing, I learn soooo much from HF.
Sgt Rock, keep thinking for me, of these great ideas,,,and I will keep using them.. way to go on a great awesome idea of hanging a bear bag,,:D
SGT Rock Always love your videos. So informative. I always have difficulty getting that rope over that tree limb. :)
Thank you SGT Rock !
Using the PCT bear bag method next week on my AT section hike in New Jersey.
Love the addition of the bone knot (s). Have a full size DutchBiner that I always carry as backup.
Tomorrow I will practice using two bone knots as suggested.
Have had good results with the throwing about 60% of the time ( with much laughter ); have asked my husband, who is excellent with projectiles ( balls, darts ) for some coaching.

Did a practice PCT bear bag hang with ( full size ) Dutch Biner and 2 bone knots today.
Very effective.
Thanks again SGT Rock ! !
.
No problem
I'm tapatalkin' ya'll
Hey Sarge .. I used one of Dutch's Ti biners after seeing you use it .. I had my line slip past the keeper a few times when hauling up quite a load .. I had 8 days food at one point .. have you had this happen .. it's inconsequential just have have to re-do it .. what I like about the smaller biner is your "spike" doesn't pass through the biner .. a real PTA .. I use a cut aluminum spike and a clove hitch .. not to bad to tie and really simple to release as the " spike" slides right out .. I really like the addition of the bonz .. sweet video too ..
I've not experienced anything like that. Next hike I'm going to try something slightly different using two rings made from PVC. It might be as easy as the bone knot.

UPDATE :
Ten times OK using this method of full size DutchBiner with BoneKnot with PCT method.
#11
On a heavy rain and wind night the BoneKnot jammed into the slot of the DutchBiner. ( BearBag had to be cut down with knife lashed to pole. )
( Because of the extreme wind, looped the hanging end around a thin branch to keep it from being tossed high into the air out of reach.
That may have made a difference, but the thin twig was not broken overnight. )
.
Great ideas on improving the PCT method. However and this is only my opinion and through my experiences I may have an easier way.
I have been using the PCT method for about 8 years now and with some of my own modifications, I have never had a problem with the bag being to low or falling to the ground because of weight (3 days worth of food for 3 people and three dogs)
Here is what I use...
Waterproof bag (3.7oz) - helps keep out the elements and keep the smell in
40' reflective guy line (32g) - slides nice on the trees and makes it real easy to see at night
#3 25lb metal S biner (14g)
#1 5lb metal S biner (4g) - the small second S biner works to help keep the line away from itself as you haul your food bag up the tree
I am beginning to become a gram weenie so I will be tinkering with a much lighter materials setup.
But anyways back to what works for me :)
1. Throw line over the tree branch
2. Attach food bag to biner
3. Pull food up the tree (use a stick to help)
4. Reach way up the line,
5. Tie your clovehitch around the small stick, but leave a small loop at the bottom instead of running it through (this allows the clovehitch to essentially become a slip knot)
6. Gather your rope, tie it up with your food or leave X amount hang
7. Leave a loop at the end of your rope
8. Find a stick that is long enough to reach the loop in the morning
9. In the morning pull the loop with your stick.
10. Clovehitch pops out, small stick goes flying, bag falls to the ground, voila (I hope that's how you say it), done!
Hope this helps (and makes sense!) :)
