HHSS SB Substitute Question

So...got my HHSS for my HH Explorer Deluxe in today.

I've also recently purchased a 'reusable' space blanket...seems to be constructed more like a tarp than an SB...considerably thicker/stronger.

I hate wasting things.

I'm wondering if I could cut the SB in the same shape as the DIY underquilt for an HH hammock, and make it reusable piece that I carry with the rest of my kit.

It should at least be quieter than a normal space blanket...but I'm wondering if it would be less effective?

Thoughts?

Not really sure what you mean by reusable space blanket. I've used mine several times, and it's no worse for the wear.

When I used my with my HHSS this past winter I noticed no noise, as I thought I would. I'm a restless sleeper, going from back to side, to other side, etc....

The question would be if this thicker/stronger SB has the same heat reflective qualities. If so, go for it. Nothing wrong with a potentially more durable piece of gear.

It is probably heavier than normal sb, if you are counting oz. But as long as it is waterproof enough to serve as a vapor barrier and reflects radiant heat, then it should work fine.

Basically, it's like an "old school" tarp (like the cheap wal mart tarps, not the spiffy nylon rain tarps).

The inside is reflective, and the whole thing appears to be water proof/resistant, and a good bit thicker and sturdier than a mylar space blanket.

It was billed as a reusable emergency blanket when I bought it.

I've had one of those for years. I use it for a multitude of purposes when bicycle camping. It seems a bit overkill for use with the Super Shelter. Also, notice that it is hemmed around the edges? I would guess -- and it's only a guess -- that if you trim the tarp down the two layers would be prone to separating.

I use one of those mylar heat sheets that are given out at the end of marathons and other endurance type events with my Super Shelter. I used the same one for a 6 month hiking trip, and it suffered only very minor damage in all that time.
