Well, I tried the cut aluminum arrow toggle option on my tree straps with whoopies goin to the blackbird. I used the proper marlin spike hitch method with the whoopie on the knot. Worked well for my 10 minute test until I pulled out the toggles to see both had collapsed. Just thought I'd informed people who want to try it to be sure to test it first. They definitely have a limit to them, i weigh 205. I'm stickin to my Petzl carabiners.
I have used arrow shafts toggles a few times with no issues. I'll have to keep a close eye. Thanks.
Did you contact Paul about this? I'm sure he would like to know, can we see pics as well. Ive used Paul's aluminum toggles before with marlin spike hitch with no problems and I weight the same as you. Makes me curious to know how this happened?Quote:

These were homemade myself from one of my easton aluminum arrows. No pics cuz i trashed and cussed them.

i have used old stick no bigger then a pencil for my set already and i never had one break ... the key is to make sure the WS is not on the toggle
Pauls gear is the best, but I'm stickin to my Petzl Spirits. They hold no matter what. My toggles looked super cool too and were super light, so you can imagine my anger in wasting a hunting arrow.
that is why I went to the local archery shop and asked for a few of their 'cut-off' pieces..

Would have liked to see the set-up, as like many others I have used the same set for a couple years now with no issues!
Many have reported failures, but it came from improperly placed whoopie slings or using a wood stick (trail found) toggle that was rotted!
Do you know if the toggle was compromised to begin with, by this I mean the seam that runs the length of the shaft was this compromised in any way? As when you cut them if the toggle/shaft twisted and opened the seam and this could cause a failure (one of the ones I cut on my own did this)!
OK, I still have enough arrow to fashion two more, so I'm gonna give it another try bc I really like the weight savings. I'm pretty sure the angle of the dangle was the problem. So to all beware, pay attention to your hang angle. I'll report back Monday after my weekend camp.

Be sure the whoopie rests on the hitch/knot above the toggle, and not on the toggle.
The toggle is just to prevent the ms hitch from falling thru.
With the whoopie on the hitch, the forces are transferred to the webbing.
i think the problem is if you hang at a flatter angle, the underside of the toggle is forced down onto the whoopie loop running under it to the hammock. its not the whoope on the toggle, but the toggle smasing onto the whoopie at a low angle hang. does this make sense? the amsteel is under high tension at a low angle hang and the aluminim smashing onto it causes the aluminum to give. **** amsteel.
Don't forget that arrows come in hundreds of wall weights (schedule??) and diameters. A large diameter thin wall would be quite a bit weaker than small\ thick one. If I remember correctly the numbers are something like 2214, the 22 is the diameter and the 14 is the gauge of the aluminum.
I have the arrow shaft toggles from Whoopie Slings and have had no issues with them. I weigh 200lbs.
I had no arrow shafts on hand, but have a zillion golf shafts. Being high strength steel I'm pretty sure they won't fail, but gotta watch them for rust (but it would take years for rust to be a problem)
I don't see how hang angle would put any extra stress on the toggle if the whoopies is placed on the knot correctly.

I would say it was a matter of wall thickness of the shaft. I recently had one fail on me. The shaft size was a 2613. I am going to see if I have any 2020's or 2117's laying around. What was your shaft size?
Just a personal preference..but I had the whoopie placed on top as in your pic. I was using a trail stick. Maybe it was a crappy toggle? :confused: But it looked to apply more tension to the toggle in the "on top" set up.Quote:

Golf shafts work fine. My Bro-in-law does golf shaft repair and has a bazillion old shafts. I borrowed a few of his scraps and trimmed them down to 3". The smaller diameter carbon shafts have done well for me. I use the smallest sections (near where the head is attached). Once the diameter increases, I discard/recycle the rest. Yup, Aluminium arrows sizes are identified with 4 numbers printed on the shaft*such as 1816. This means the arrow has an outside diameter of 18/64" and a wall thickness of 20 one thousands of an inch.Quote:

I had a similar issue with my homemade toggles. I determined that my webbing was bunching up as I created my marlin spike hitch where the webbing wraps around the toggle. That was creating a much smaller surface area that was contacting the toggle, so when weight was applied, the knot cinched down tighter on the toggle with a small surface area, thus contributing to a collapsing toggle. It didn't actually fail, mind you, it was just an observation that I made so I discarded the toggles. BTW, I weigh about 250.
I use a cut down aluminum Slurpee straw from 7-11. Have a look at my photo gallery. There is a close up of the straw. When I first started using it, I was at 240lbs. I've lost weight and have no fears now.
good info guys. this was my first arrow toggle attempt. i still think im stickin to my biners. makes me feel better when layin down.
I have been watching this thread with interest as I awaiting the arrival of my whoopee slings (and some other cool gear from AHE).
I scored some arrow shafts from a mate at work that I’ll give a go – all be it hanging ever so close to the ground.
I measured them on the weekend and they are aluminum, wall wide of .7mm and shaft diameter of 1cm. (sorry about the metric numbers guys).
I’ll give you a update, should only be days away.. Surly.. Is that the mail man?
