Hi from central MI.

Hey Y'all! My name is Erik and I'm a long time ground dweller looking to get into this hanging thing. Many, many things intrigue and attract me to the concept, like being able to set up and tear down under a tarp and the whole comfort thing.:cool: But I have to admit that I am a little concerned and confused about a few things. For instance, I have spent a great deal of time and money trying to go ultra light, or at least close to it. My current shelter offers bug protection for less than two pounds. From what I have heard over on some other forums is that I just can't get that light with a hammock set up. I don't want to believe that. I also don't want to spend a bunch of money trying out different systems and rejecting them like I did with tents, pads, bags and the like. I am willing to put up a fair chunk of change to get it right the first time. Right now I'm really eyeballing a WBBB, seems like alot of people here enjoy theirs. I'm 6'0" and about 215lbs. if anybody wants to make other lightweight, full bug suggestions.

welcome,....there are a few of us going to pinckney rec this friday for an overnight if you can make it. i think SGT Rock has a thread with the latest set up at a pound and a half for everything.

Sgt. Rock has a lot of DIY in his setup if I recall. Watermonkey's blog has a good light setup at just over 3lbs with insulation (both under and over).

@bloomgorge, I'm actually going car camping this weekend at green lake with my GF and dog. Thats not too far, hmmmm. Would be cool to see some setups in person. The GF is not much of a hiker but I usually put in 250 mi or so a season.
@ Packeagle, Yea Ive seen watermonkeys blog, I'm actually subscribed to his youtube channel. good stuff. He is the one who swayed me to the WBBB.

I used to be an UL ground dweller. But today, I would rather hike out than go to ground.
My hammock with bugnet, fairly large tarp and down underquilt and down top quilt comes in at 3-1/4 pounds. That rig will take me down to freezing and another 3/4 pound would take me to near single digits. My summer setup is under 3 pounds.

So, if you consider that these weights represent two of the "big 3" (shelter, sleeping, backpack) that's not bad and could only be beat significantly by sleeping on a ccf pad on the ground with just a tarp.

Comfort over a total ul tent is a big reason most sway from the trees.
If your set up right you can stand up under your tarp, cook your meals, sit or lay up off the ground.
A total tent system can be lightweight, just be sure to include all your pads, sleeping bag, sore back and hips in the equation.

Try to meet up with bloomgorge and that entourage, you'll get a good test session. And he's a good guy.

Good deal, I know there will be three hammocks, a WB and two hh. I think there will be some groundlings as well. There may be more hammocks but it was an open invite to show up with no reply needed. We should be at blind lake at 6 or so.

@bloomgorge, I did the "poto" earlier this spring. If I remember there is a place I can park my car and its just a short 1/4 or so to the campground? I'll try to find it if I can get away for a bit.
@opie, Awesome! not too many hikers in L town that I know of. I usually take my dog to the park off of Marshall rd. behind the old armory around six pm or so everyday if you ever want to meet up.

Welcome from another Michiganian. Just remember that weight is an issue, so is comfort. Cost to benefit ratio with hanging from a comfort standpoint is substantial. Comfort is amazing once it is dialed in. Gotta say that I mostly paddle so weight is not as big an issue.

My son lives in Lansing, nice city. Good luck with your research and welcome to the forums. We might have a southern Michigan hang sometime this winter, will keep you in mind.

Welcome to the site and hope you find what works for you. I have trouble sleeping on the ground or hammock. I switched to hammock, tired of the mice and because I think it is easier to stop anywhere and find a place to hang.
