I was wanting to make my own down UQ. I have the material and down. All I need to figure out is the baffles and how to make them. I have made a template of a 3 season Yeti and added 10" to the length. It seems to have a 2" area of material inside the outer layers. (its not sewn straight through) All suggestions are welcomed. Thanks for the help!
This is the way I make my baffle and is the best instuctions I know of. The only thing is the article it before we started doing differential baffles. I usually have 7 inches between that baffle on the outside and 6 on the inside. I hem my bugnetting b4 I sew it to the shell. Also remember the outside chambers need to be a little bigger b/c they don't have a baffle on one end.Quote:

Hey that helps alot! I made a summer quilt (12oz.) yesterday with not much loft. I will add the larger baffles to the next one and have a warmer one. Getting the top to seal is a problem now. I have to modify that area and the bottom is sealing great. That down can be a mess! I will post pics soon.....Thanks for the help!Quote:

^. Teedee guide I am literally half way through my project and it's is tedious but I am hoping the benefits will out way my thinning patience.
I am struggling to understand this too. Looked at Jeff's project a lot, what I don't get is how does the baffle attach to the other side of the quilt? I've thought too, what if you staggered the baffles and put one on each side of the quilt, letting them hang in the space between the baffles on the other side when the quilt is assembled?
Maybe this help visualize it. Made this really quick in PS, so no critiques. :D

Backtrack, one thing to keep in mind the thicker the baffle the more down you will need. I thought 3" after sewing would be ok but on a full size 76"x47"
I have 2 lbs 2 oz approx of down loaded I'm hopeing to leave it at that but if
I were to do again 2" would have been fine I think.

If they were hanging loosely inside and just stitched to one layer the down would travel and end up in one big ball, creating cold spots.
You can sew all of one side of lets say the inner side of the quilt, roll it up to make handling easier. Expose one row of previous sewn on baffle, sew that to the outer side of the quilt, creating the baffle or tube. Roll back again to the baffle and repeat..
Or sew each baffle to both as in dblc's diagram.

End result, you need enclosed chambers or baffles to keep the down from moving around.
A loose filled quilt with no baffles will become a large pillow.

No the baffle is sewn to top and the bottom or it wouldn't work.Quote:

differential refers to the top and bottom being slightly different -width/length from the other- this allows one side (usually top) to be pulled tight against the hammock bottom without crushing the down up against it, due to the bottom layer also being pulled tight. hope that helps, KM
Thanks PKT I am done except for the filling with the bottom but I just need to do almost everything for the top quilt I am really excited to see it stuffed and hang it to see how I did it looks amazing and am really happy with it. You should put up pics of yours. If you finished.Quote:
