Speed and convenience... Faster and easier than feeding the end through the loop.
what rapt said.
and with the rings on there, i'd have to sew some custom straps so i could pass them through the loop, as the stock loops are tiny. (i have thought about going this route... maybe if i become an ultralight hiker guy...)
and these aren't the lightest biners you can find... there are certainly lighter and slightly smaller rated for hanging a person on.
i've thought about going straps only, doing the speer knot, but i like being able to take tension off the line and raising or lowering the huggas simply by grabbing the biner and wiggling. with the speer knot or other wrap you have to unwrap the clingy knot / straps.
I'm hanging almost the same way bmike is. Stock HHUL tree straps with two pairs of SMC descending rings. I first tied my rings to 5mm accessory cord (5.5kN strength) but then decided I really don't often hang from trees that far apart. Next time around I'm using just a simple added loop of line to make a space for the rings to pass through. bmike's use of a biner is faster, I just don't have the biners.
Some nice things about the garda hitch on the rings: it tightens easily, holds without a backup knot, and releases easily after a night of tension on the line.

Hanging using two rings and the garda hitch with extra cord.

Next time around it'll be the rings, stock tree straps, and a rope loop to pass the rings through.
keep the spectra on hammock use ENO Slapstaps daisy chain hook beaner to slapstap and then tie the spectra with a bowlin knot that way you can tie it to what ever lenght you need if you can't get tree's close enough.
look at the two pictures I have that set up was with the tree's about 23 ft apart.
I use tie down straps with cam buckles 6' long total adjustment
