So does Walmart not carry fabric anymore? I went to 2 different locations and that department is now gone. Looked all over the store, the arts and craft section is now just an isle. Is it just my area or is this nationwide?

Must be your area, we had a period for about 2 years with no fabrics here in Lexington, thye just got them back in the winter time.... too many complaints I guess.
In my area we have one Walmart that seems to have all of the fabric from the area Walmarts. It looked for a time that the walmarts did away with the fabric departments. I don't know if it is the same know or not I havent checked lately.
I think they only have a dept. If they have a mom and pop store in the area to compete w. The 4 walmarts here only 1 has a fabric dept.
Some do some do not. They just reset the fabric department of the wallyworld here. Have not figured out it is still the same size of not.
My area has a large mennonite community and they tend to make their own clothes. So there is a good fabric section at the local one.
I heard,,from my relation that works at Walmart...they are doing studys at each store,,what sells,,and what doesn't,,where they make money,,and where they don't,,so they are changing individual stores per each area,,we lost our fabric shop where I shop at that particular Walmart,,but,,can go 40 miles down the road,,and that Walmart has fabric. that is what is happening.
I went to a walmart 2 days ago, that I've never been to before, and lo and behold, a fabric section!! :boggle:
2 Isles of fabric.. but through it all, only 4.5 yards of ripstop nylon.. @ 1.50 a yard, I bought it all. It was was labeled as "Misc Sample Fabric" and was actually stuffed in the fleeces.
Not enough to make a DL hammock :( so today, I called every walmart in 50 miles and this is what I found. ( since there is no "fabric dept" label on their stores?!)
Within 50 miles of me, there are 22 walmarts
3 have fabric departments. However: none of them had employees capable of telling me over the phone if they had nylon in stock, if at all.
And if you decide to do what I did, and call and ask, make sure you ask
Do you have a fabric cutting table, where I can buy fabric by the yard?
Because there are some which have pre measured novelty fabrics for crafts.
We have a Wal-Mart 10 miles from us both north and south, both have fabric, I have not found rip-stop at either place in the last year, none. I keep looking, hoping for that gold-mine find.
As you've probably already gathered, the answer is, "It depends."
Though, if you do find one, don't expect the employees to know anything about weights of fabric, tensile strength, or...well...pretty much anything related to our outdoor passion other than the cost of the fabric. This is true even at places like JoAnne's, which is a fabric store, not just a big-box department store that happens to carry fabric.
Hard to blame them, though; we're such a niche community that we probably don't even bring in 0.1% of total sales for a place like that.
Anyway, good luck in your search!
