I have the down with 5 onces over-stuff IMO its great and it fit my BB perfect right out of the box and it covers from my head down to the footbox
i just ordered a custom full length synthetic from WL.
i use all synthetic insulation both for ease of care and i'm allergic to down.
this will be my first uq and i have full confidence that it will be with me for a long time.
the guys at WL are easy to communicate with and they've been injecting thread for a long time.
watch for some pix after i take delivery.
Roger that fellows..I appreciate the replys.
Differences between synth and down?
As always... high quality down compresses smaller, is warmer, and much lighter than your lower quality down or synthetic item. It'll last decades with annual washing even if it's used all the time.
Synthetic insulation breaks down more quickly the more you use it. My synthetic top quilt has been a loaner for a few years now, and gets a lot less use than my down quilts. I finally got round to using it again - got cold in the high 30s, where before it was toasty warm. All my gear is stored uncompressed and lofted. All of it gets dried out and occasionally cleaned properly...
Thank you for the reply and the great info....you hit the nail on the head.
Do you think it would be ok for spring , summer , fall use ? then maybe go to down in the winter ?
I think you can use either in winter, but it will take proportionately more loft / insulation to be warm enough. The same applies for winter as for any other season.
I take down year round, and have to be prepared for 20F lows at any time because of where I tend to go. My 0 degree underquilt actually weighs less than my 20F underquilt - the latter is a full length, the Warbonnet Winter Yeti is 3/4 length with more loft but rated at 0F.
Thats good to know and I really appreciate it..I live in NC , summers here are brutal and unforgiving....Semper FI to you all!!
for summer i use a fleece blanket between the layers of my bb, unless i go up to Mt.Mitchell. in the past i've been using a combo of pad and sleeping bag. the lowest i've gone is 20*. i decided to get a full length synth UQ in hopes of having a universal UQ that i can supplement with pads and bags to handle anything NC has to offer(with the poss exception of Mt Mitchell in january).
WL is local, good peeps and make very good products, that why i'm going with them.
