Has Tinny lost his touch?

Tinny has done it again... after telling us we don't need tree straps, he's now telling us how to use Insultex. Here is his video.

Tinny found that 8 layers of Insultex did the trick for him... using it as a pad inside the hammock. That indicates that he does not do much research on the work that others already have done (what he calls "dogma"). Here on HF, there are many threads discussing how to make the most of Insultex with hammocks, based on years of experience and dozens of prototypes.

One thing that we found is that Insultex does not perform well when compressed, which is what happens when we lay directly on it. What Tinny has discovered is that it takes 8 layers to overcome the ill effects of compression.

Tinny was trying to feel the warmth with ambient conditions about 55*F, and found that it takes 8 layers of IX. Thing1 and I regularly use a Baby Orca with three layers of IX down to freezing. His 10 oz pad is much smaller than a Baby Orca 3/4 UQ, which weighs about half that, including the suspension.

I suppose his next video will be to announce his ground breaking discovery: suspend the Insultex underneath the hammock for better results!

Tinny is a real innovator. I love my mini-Atomic alcohol stove. With hammocks suspensions and insulation, he seems to have lost his touch.

Yeah, watching that video forced me into making my first youtube comment letting him know he needs to hang it like a uq. His reply was his "research" says otherwise. To each his own but he lost a lot of credibility with that one. Awesome builder of stoves, hammocks...well...someone needs to join hammock forums!

I stopped watching Tinny a year ago...

I think hes a good guy. I was just commenting on the insultex part. like in my opinion its a waste of 8 layers which could have been an uq or 2 or a isulated sock which is the way I would have gone.

It's just disappointing to me that all of the research that we offer to the general public through HF, for anyone to use for personal or commercial purposes, would be ignored out of hand (Insultex) or dismissed as dogma (tree huggers and load calcs) by anyone with a reputation for credibility and innovation.

There are hundreds of threads and thousands of posts about hammock suspensions on HF.

Everything about the design of MMG Insultex UQs has been discussed in detail on HF, whether it deals with compression, darts, loft, InsulTubes, fit, fiddle-factor or suspension. There is even a thread about cloning them, with an atta-boy from me!

It's not about Tinny personally (he's a cute old guy, and I love his derby). It's about his affront to Hammock Forums by dismissing what has gone before.

Is Tinny going to start making IX quilts? Or pads? Curious how they'd be. He makes great $100 stoves and $40 beer can pots.

Tinny told me I was making it up when I said a vapor barrier beneath (pads) the sleeper has condensation potential.

I think he's the kind of guy that likes to figure things out for himself. I think it's an admirable trait even if it's not the fastest way to get from A to B.

With 60" wide fabric, it would certainly but easy to skin a skin-on-frame boat with it. BUT: the holes punched in the IX to make it breathable might work against you in this application. :lol:

MacEntyre - the problem may or may not be Tinny, but rather the forum format and accessibility.

People who have been on the forums a long time and read the threads regularly, know what information is available. A new person is at a large disadvantage at that. Precisely what information is available can be very hard to come by. The organization of the forums does not make gathering such information easy or convenient. Organizing into broad categories makes finding one topic extremely difficult or you have to very lucky to stumble across it or lucky in that someone activates an old thread or one of the old timers answers a related question and links the thread or......

But finding that thread can be time consuming.

Heck even when I know the information is available and even know who started the thread and who contributed, it can be frustrating to find the thread that I KNOW exists. Especially when the thread has not been active for a long time or was started a long time back. The search function leaves a lot to be desired.

What format would be better?? I have no idea and probably no one else has either right now or maybe it would be used.

Me too. I think the idea was floating around at the Goat Island hang if memory serves. But we went so far as to recommend pulling the IX canoe/kayak behind a jet ski :D

Not intentionally thread drifting here but since it was mentioned. I hate the search function for the exact reasons. I wish they could be combined by type or something (insulation, pack, etc) but know that would also be cumbersom.

The solution to HF searching is Google... try this: "site:hammockforums.net insultex"
It returns 16,700 results in several dozen pages. It can be refined easily. :cool:

Perhaps little stoves in particular lend themselves to his random style of discovery,
where the cost of reinventing the wheel is low, and the chance of stumbling upon
something good is high. ;)

I just wish he hadn't said "hammock dogma." That wasn't due to poor search facilities. :eek:

Who knows? Maybe I will be eating my words when Tinny makes a video showing
how to use four ounces of Insultex to keep warm in the Maine winter... :rolleyes:

I sent him a message on Youtube with the link to diy instructions for an IX UQ.

It could be that he just doesn't know yet. He has mentioned he's holding off on an UQ until CUBEN can be used, which Hammockgear is doing already. Maybe he just needs a little time to catch up.

Using as a kayak is good gear talk. Using it inside the hammock is not good gear.:D

So I wrote up a long post about my thoughts and feeling towards Tinny's videos. But after reading over it I decided it was best not to post as it was completely non-hammock related. So I'll just say that I love hanging in my hammock and HYOH! :D

I just watched the video and saw nothing wrong with it.
What's wrong with someone experimenting and finding his own way. Isn't that half the fun of this hobby.

IMO, Laying on 8 layers of IX is no dumber than trying to punch holes in IX to try and make it breathable. If we don't experiment we don't learn.

Like Mac mentioned, it wasn't the video, or the experiment that started this thread. It was the use of the words "hammock dogma". If I had dedicated the time and energy into establishing insultex as a usable light weight insulation for hammocks, that Mac has, I may feel slightly insulted.

I'm sure Tinny would feel the same if a hammock guy did the same with stoves. Either way, who cares? If it works for tinny, that's awesome.

It's no misinterpretation... Tinny is doing all this on purpose.

Tinny suddenly starts being disrespectful to his customers by insulting them, calling them names, and criticizing their use of gear totally unrelated to what he makes and sells... you should be saying "shame on Tinny."

This is being done for sole purpose of generating controversy and thus driving traffic and increasing sales. He has said this in the past. The only lemmings I have seen are some of his followers.

Tinny says hammockers use gear "because he said to"... just a bunch of followers.

Have you seen the title of his web site?

+1 on the search function. Sometimes I see folks telling newbies to "just search the threads"....Trouble is it doesn't work:confused: Luckily most of the old timers here know this and someone usually steps up to help!:)

I was reading the thread on abandon your straps. One of the last to comment was one of tinnys close friends (I can't remember his name). In short he explained that tinny is one of those people that will look at what others have done and then go back to square one. I think he needs to prove it him self more then anything else. So when I see some thing from him regarding hammocks it will be with a grain of salt. I don't think he is doing it to snub his nose at what has already been done here but its just the type of personality he has. He needs to see and do it.

With that said I don't think pointing out what he has done wrong to him will do much (both on youtube or here). Maybe a genital nudge in a different direction is what would be better when we think he has lost it.

The discovery process in hammocking is one that I have really enjoyed. From stumbling across Shug's "Tarp Talk" video when looking to get into bushcraft and then watching his entire vid collection to finding this place I now refer to has my place of residence, and through to watching tinny's vids. It has all been fun!

One activity when out in the woods that I really enjoy is cooking. So third to subscribing to Shug and joining HF was to check out what products minibulldesigns had to offer me.

The product information available on cooking items that can be found on minibulldesigns YouTube channel is second to none and it check out the information available each day. And it is a enjoyable time for the most of it.

As those who watch tinny's vids would know he has only just started to speak of hammocks and looks to be just starting out in his own adventure of discovery which is great.

Product information is taken on by myself dependent on how qualified the person offering it seems to be in the field in question. If the information source is one that has had experience in the product it is taken on board in a very different way that if it is simply someone who is trying things out.

Innovation is a great thing, hey I have made a heap of items that ended up in the bin and a couple that I use in my kit. I'm not looking to make a set number of you tube clips or have a subscription base that that I benefit from. So unfortunately, you don't get to see everything that I have thought about, thought of thinking about, or spoke to rwod about.

I think that I felt a little put off when something or rather a group of people that I have learnt allot from, and I would image have by most promoted a persons product; are put forward in a negative light.

So products.... how many threads have we all read about customers awaiting there newly purchased goods from many of the suppliers noted and supported here in HF? Heaps yeah! And what is the most common reply? It is that it will be worth the wait. And that is because from what I believe, is a commitment to quality over quantity in goods put into the market. I have become accustom to this approach and possibly when I see something other than that my ears pick up. I'm not a fan of product just for the sake / view count of it.

It is interesting when information from a expert in one field is offered outside of the field they are a expert in. As it can often come with implied expertise.

Every day I check out the new post here on HF and look for new information to take in from the HF elders and likewise look for new comers not unlike myself to share the discovery with.

So in answer to the posted question...... (I wasn't sure I'd get to it either)

I don't that Tinny has lost his way, but is only starting to find it on a new path.

"be nice" is the new addition to the close that comes to mind.

This thread was poorly conceived and some of the comments are outside of the respectful nature of this forum.

Discussing the details of materials and gear, and its uses, is fine. But largely that isn't happening here. This is a discussion of Tinny as a person, with reactionary comments and assumptions.

HF isn't the place for that.
