Hi Grapenut,
We are still on for this trip and your more than welcome to join us. If you decide you want to go shoot me a PM. I am trying to get a head count to see about a shuttle from the state park to springer.
Thanks,

Already did GA AT this year. One of the coldest nights ever spent was in Jarrod Gap. Should be warmer for you. Lots of places to Hang. Shelters fill up early and tent sites shortly after but always plenty of trees...
Yeah I am keeping a close eye on the weather. Lots of snow up there this year and reports of very cold weather on the trail.

I was out there a few weeks ago. Temps went from the upper 60 down to the mid 20s while I was hiking.
Also, when I was there there was no parking at the Byron Reese parking lot because of all the day hikers. It it's full you can park at Vogel State Park which is less than 3 miles down the road.
Just wondering if the group came to a consensus on your start and stop locations. I am thinking of trying to meet up with you guys for a night or two.
I am planning to spend a week on the AT in early/middle of May starting at 3 Forks and hiking as far north as I can in a week. My goal is to have a good time and hike until I get tired and set up my hammock and take a break. Was on the GA At section last 4th July and heat kicked my rear.
Hi Trudge,
Probably the best place to plan to catch us would be Hawk Mountain Shelter on Sunday night. The plan right now is to meet at Byron Reese around 9 am and then head back to Springer to start hiking. Monday we should be staying near Gooch Gap but that depends on our pace.
Thanks,

Now, the forecast that the NOAA puts out may or may not be correct, but it's usually in the ballpark. Here are some spot forecasts for the area we're going to be hiking (roughly cued to our schedule):
Springer Mountain (starting at 09:00 Sunday): here
Hawk Mountain (starting at 10:00 Sunday): here
Woody Gap (starting at 08:00 Monday): here
Blood Mountain (starting at 09:00 Monday): here.
Assuming that these are accurate, we should be looking at 40s to 50s for the lows and 50s to 60s for the highs. My assumption is that this may vary up to 15* F either way...least, that's how I'm going to be packing. There's a chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon...we'll see what they're saying as we get closer.
Really looking forward to this one!
Yeah the weather looks like it is going to be really good. (Knock on wood)
