I was wondering if a sin nylon hammock sock is as effective in the rain as a tarp??
IMO a silnylon sock would collect condensation inside (no breathability) and would not afford you any room to do anything but lie there or sleep if you used it without a tarp on your hammock in rain.
I agree with NCPatrick. The silnylon would keep most of the water out, but also hold a lot of condensation and perspiration in leaving the occupant pretty clammy. The tarp also provides dry storage and workspace that a sock would not. I'd hate to be caught in a morning rain storm where I knew that the moment that I got out of my clammy sock I would be getting further wet from the rain and have no dry place to eat my breakfast or pack my gear.
