Pole orientation?

I know it's probably a completely worthless question, but it's been rattling around my head for a long time, so here goes:

I was wondering if there was a "not so obvious" (to me) reason that folks are using their trekking poles grip down, tip up, while they are in play for "porch modes". I've always done it the other way around, and in really crummy weather I have been really grateful to be able to jab/anchor those points into the Earth. I've never had a loop slip off the grip of the trekking pole once it is under tension either.... So, thoughts?

Like yourself mine go grip up point down. I can see folks putting the points through the grommets to hold the tarp in place but I'd rather keep my grips out of the dirt.

I'm a "keep your tips down" kind of guy myself. A reason for "tips up" would be to insert them into something, maybe a loop?

I run line from the corner of the tarp, to a clove hitch around the handle or pole, down to the ground. Keeps the handle clean and the pole well grounded.

Down. They grab in the soil better and keep the grips clean.
Also with telescoping poles, it allows water to run down the outside of the trek pole and not into the sections. Grips down allows water in the pole.

And having them point up can be dangerous!! IF someone were to slip or trip, they might stab themselves.

Grips up for all of the above reasons plus it keeps the salty cork farther away from little critters that might want to chew on it.
