Got out for an overnighter close to home. 32° was forecasted with freezing rain, but we didn't get the rain til after I got home. Got to tweak with my equipment anyways.

Do you like the underquilt and undercover on separate suspensions?
I think I'll have to check that out if I try an undercover again.
Well looks like you had a pretty peaceful camp. The only thing I noticed was the tarp seemed a bit loose. Might be a problem in a hard blow.
Thanks for posting ... always like seeing other hammocker's in (as Shug says) "in the Piney woods"!
Seemed like separate suspensions worked well.Quote:

Yes, I'm gonna have to redo tarp altogether if it's gonna work in bad weather.Quote:

Any suggestions?
Well other than pulling it nice and tight on set up ... if it's a sil tarp I strongly reccmd tarp tensioners ... there's several discussion here about how to make them ... and different options. That'll keep the tarp tight even after it starts getting a little slack when it gets wet. I use the kind made from rubber tubing pulled over 3 mm cord like in the picture attached below.
I use them on the four bottom corners. Attaching the rig to the tarp and then the line to the rig pulling it fully extended. Work pretty good. Some folks are using just bungees similar to the ones you have on your under cover rig.
very nice,,, thanks for sharing
Here's one link to a bunch of different tarp tensioners
Tarp tie outs
... a search will show a lot of discussions on tarp tie outs and rigs
Nice video.
Re: tarp rigging:
It's a bit easier to get a tight rig on the tarp if your corner lines come in at a 45 degree angle. Just split the difference between going straight along the side or bottom line, & you should be golden. From what I could see in the video, you were at about a 30 degree angle. Warbonnet Guy has a good video on his site showing exactly what I'm talking bout. http://www.warbonnetoutdoors.net/ & scroll down to "Tarp"
Also, don't be afraid to snug it down. Self tensioned tarp tie outs make it easier to keep tight. Several of the tarp makers here have them in various configurations, plus there are instructions on HF for making your own. I use homemade sling shot elastic (Wrist Rocket, $11.00 a pair at Target) on cord, similar to what Jacks-r-Better sell.
FYI; mine freeze up at temps below about 30 & no longer pull tight, so at the colder temps I need to adjust the tie outs myself 1 - 3 times a night. I usually only worry about that if in a un-sheltered area on a windy night, so: when camping in my back yard where I have no choice in site selection.
Instead of the Slingshot tubing ... I'd seriously consider using the Thera-Band Exercise Tubing - Latex Tubing - Green - Heavy ... you can buy it at pretty good prices on Amazon.com. So far it's worked for me to 26 degrees without freezing up. Not sure below that though.
Only problem with any latex tubing is it will degrade pretty quickly with prolonged exposure to UV.
True. That being said, mine get near constant use & have been in place for almost 2 years. So a minimum of at least 500 uses, & sometimes the tarp is left up all day, so lets say a minimum of 3 weeks in the sun. As I usually am under heavy shade, (& a lot of times setup after dark, take down before sunrise) maybe that makes a diff. I am surprised they have lasted so long.
Nice video treenester. I use to take scouts to that very spot. We weathered a tornado that came up river there one night about 30 years ago and I was in a hammock.
Ahhhh. Nice. Quiet lil' trip. Good shots of rigging ..... folks on here LOVE that!
Nothing like a solo trip in the piney Bama woods. Bet you wished it had rained huh?

Nice video! Looked cozy!
What kinda of webbing are you hanging from? Looks cool.
Acer
It's a hollow-braid camo webbing I got from a bait store. Prolly a little heavy for what I need. Hope to start on a new tarp soon. Got some more of the $1.50/yd Wally World rip-stop just waitin to be sewn.Quote:
