Now I'm starting to get why it's addictive.

I got home from work a little early today to be greeted by my newest acquisitions...two new GTULs

I couldn't resist running down to the basement and hanging it up to see what the deal was. After pulling down my HH Safari (drying out after last weekend's backpacking trip), I rigged it up with some ratchet straps and got in.

I now get why this can turn into a full blown addiction. My Safari is like the SUV of hammocks...but the GTUL is like a sports car. I definitely like them both, but for completely different reasons. And just like cool cars, you want to play with/own all of them...

My original plan was to put whoopies and a structural ridge line on it, but after lying in it for a bit I kind of dug the simple open air feeling of the whole thing. I've always felt somewhat encased by the Safari (probably due to the bug net and bottom entry), but the GTUL is the complete opposite. I may just set up some sort of non-structural ridge line, or just hang hang light gear/a bug net (if needed) from my tarp's ridge line and call it a day.

Anyone out there doing the same thing?

Oh, and as for the whoopies...the Amsteel is on its way as we speak. I'm going to use the straps from my Safari w/ some carabiners. Can't wait to splice those bad boys and get them installed!

Yes, it is addictive. Wait till you've spliced some amsteel and start thinking about fabric and thread injectors. It's only beginning. You're entering a whole new world, but it's a sight more comfortable than the one you left.

A dozen hammocks later, a dozen stoves later, a closetful of quilts later, more suspensions than hammocks, etc., etc.

Well, maybe just a little OBSESSED! :)

I always have an adjustable hammock ridgeline - helps insure a consistent hang. Some people say it gets in the way of using the hammock as a chair, but I've never experienced that.

I subscribe to the school of thought that it's only an addiction if you're trying to quit, and nobody likes a quitter.

Since you're already to far gone to warn you to stay away from the amsteel, just say no to stoves. :)

I know what you mean. I haven't even slept in my BB yet and already looking at uq. Went from "**** they're expensive " to that's not bad for a quality product.

Step. Away. From. The. Credit. Card. Slooowly, with your hands over your head and nobody gets hurt.

Unlike you other guys, I can stop whenever I want. I just happen to like it. A lot.

Maybe a new thread injection machine for Christmas. I may go into business because I have more than I can use. Strike that, I just need more time to use it.:boggle:

I have a camo GTUL on the way next week. I've got the same problem on the addiction but there are so many reasons . . . .

This bare-bones set up (after suspension mods) will be used as my weight saving option for backpacking. I couldn't beat the price, right?

my facebook sent me a message asking where ive been lol. i replied... ive been hangin around.. jk im with you all. this is just nutty. but ive never hiked longer camped more comfortably or felt better. this site and the hammock community is the real reason. when i posted needed help with my tarp, i got so much feedback. including a comment from the face of hammocking (shug) the brains (grizz) and dejoha the author of the ultimate hang. who personally shot a video of tarpwork specifically with my tarp and for me. these people and many others. heck each and every one of you are the real glue that makes noobs stick. im stuck.and i love it

That's the same reason I got mine. Way lighter than my Safari and I couldn't beat $12 each. I also figured I'd get a spare in the event that I mess up modding it or destroy one of them.

Speaking of mods, the USPS held up to its motto and delivered my Amsteel and carabiners today even with Hurricane Sandy outside my door. I've already printed out the splicing walk through, and am planning on making my whoopies via headlamp if needed. :D

I didn't realize how bad it was until yesterday. I got my Kelty 12x12 not even a month ago, and now I'm sitting here saying, "Well, my Kelty is big, so maybe I should get a little one, a light one and a medium one."
It's like a plague....a comfortable, enjoyable plague.

I moved from obsessing over suspension mods to making DIY alcohol stoves. Soda can, Beer can, you know you can experiment almost endlessly with number of jet holes and placement?
I foolishly thought I didn't like camping before my HH. Is there something in the rain fly coating that they're not telling us about?
A heads up would be nice...what I am most likely to obsess about after best stove design? I am guessing TQ/UQ but what do I know? MMWWAAAAH! L'il Cal XO

I got my Amsteel rope in the mail yesterday and bought some more stuff today.

Saturday I was tailgating at the TCU/OSU college football game in Stillwater and noticed a JoAnn Fabrics two blocks away... so I left the tailgate to look for rip-stop nylon.

I have to agree. 6 whoopies, 4 continuous loops, 2 soft shackles in amsteel and 5 continuous loops for prusiks in zing-it later, I have a second order coming. Because, well......you have to have multiple color options for whoopies. And adjustable ridgelines. And camo tree straps are the new black.

I think I have the addiction as well. Limited on time and funds... That makes it worse because then you fall into the DIY mode and that just never ends. I knew I had an addiction the other day. After a really bad day at work I just wanted to come home and lay in my hammock. It's like you go to a different place the moment you lift your feet off the ground.
Love my hammock and I love this place. You guys and gals rock!

My first hammock of my adult life was a GTUL, then called travel hammock. It is what led to my growing addiction. I still have like 4-5 of them and I have given several away to friends and family to introduce them to hammocking.

Addictions are bad? Who knew...

You can turn an addiction into a controlled hobby by letting one item go each time before getting something new. I tend to sell things on ebay or pass them on to one of my backpacking kids. I also use it as a secret weapon to keep the wife at bay. She sees things going out and never seems to have an issue with me getting something new. And, I you can hold her to the same standard(that’s the secret weapon part).

That is very sound advice, and is usually the only way that I can afford to buy anything.

I feel like a crack head now that my house burned and I have to replace most of my gear. I have dropped way more money than I am used to spending and my cheapskate side is riding me very hard about it.:boggle:
