I am planning to build a "hammock arbor" disguised as a place for a porch swing. Any advice on how far apart the poles should be?
Thanks,
Brian

depends on your hammocks i would think.
generally 14-15ft is the recommended distance
It will take some creative logic and words to convince the spouse that your hammock is indeed a porch swing.
I agree with the 14'-15' recommendation. 14' would work slightly better as dimensional lumber is sold in 2' increments. Less waste.
Cheers

Given that most swings are ~5' wide, this is going to look a bit strange. Narrower is gooder.
I can hang any hammock I own inside of 10'. Throw tarps into the mix, and I need 12'.
Or you can accept the fact that she is going to see right through your nonsense anyway, and go with 14'.:D
Recomend using 4x6 post for hanging. I have had 4x4 post break on me.
Two good posts 6' apart, 14' from two more posts set 6' apart, tops tied together with good pt lumber, a few 2x4's across the top. A good place to hang a swing on either end, and hammocks on each side. Plant grape vines and in 2 or 3 yrs. it will look as if it has always been there. Looks good and everybody wins.
Any picture updates on this project?
