Unexpected suprise Amsteel.
Samson was extremely kind to donate a spool of Amsteel 7/74'' for my scout troop and Venture Crew to explore hammock camping at this years spring camp-o-ree. I have been practicing whoopie slings and splices and everything with 12 strand. This spool is 8 strand. Do I just pull 4 strands instead of 6 like I do with the 1/8"? I need to make a fid with a smaller gauge wire I suspect, is there anything else I should keep in mind working with a slightly smaller diameter rope?
+1 on the bead or twine for preventative purposes
It is one thing for you to deal with personal whoopies, but add the factor of teh numerous scouts fiddling with the slings and the possibility of burying a loop is almost guaranteed!
As for tapers, I wouldn't worry too much about being exact. Just cut several and you will get an acceptable taper. Ain't rocket science.
