That is a great looking hammock. The option to take the net or take the weather shield is very cool. I am curious about the damages to the pocket book and material options. I am going to have to contact Papa Smurf soon.
Sorry about the loss of Willow.
that does look really cool i wander what all materials he will make them out of "maybe a double layer for up larger men.
Can't wait to hear how well that cover works.

Very cool design! Thx for the video rip.
Sorry for the loss of your dog. I lost a 6yr spaniel/lab mix a little over a yr ago.
Hi Rip,
Really sorry to hear about your dog.
Are you up for questions on the mechanics of this super looking PS hammock?
I've got a customer's PapaSmurf hammock in my shop right now, so I can fit a sock to it...
It is an extra large double layer hammock with the equivalent of a 2QZQ Mod #4 bugnet just like rip waverly's Danger Bird, which stows into a bag hidden in the end-hood. Incredibly well made... a real nice hammock that will last a long time.

Great review of a nice looking hammock.
I do love those channeled ends, opens things up substantially IMHO.
How in the heck does he do that using the same zipper?
I was wondering the same thing. My guess is that both the bugnet and the cover can be completely removed. It reminds me of the lining of a Timberland type of jacket. In a sense, you could create any type of cover - no-see-um, cuben, sil, etc. - and just change them whenever you need or want.
Great concept with the netting/cover or fully open options. I'm curious about cost and comfort.
Pretty awesome design!!
Wow, That is one sweet looking hammock! I hope that when you get a chance to do a trip with it that you will post a field test review.
that ting is awesome
Thanks guys, this one did turn out pretty decent.
Materials:
Hammock Body - 1.1oz Coyote ripstop (DIYGS)
Netting - .9oz Noseeum from (OWF)
Overcover - Coyote Momentum 90 ripstop from (Thru-Hiker)
Zipper - #3 coil w/ double tab sliders (DIYGS)
Whoopies - 7/64 Gray Amsteel, 6ft (DIYGS)
Ridgeline - 1.75mm Lash-it (DIYGS)
Tree Straps - 1" Mediumweight Polypro, 6ft (Strapworks)
Zipper Hoods - Black Momentum Taffeta (Thru-Hiker)
Peak Bags - 1 Noseeum & 1 Coyote Momentum ripstop
Double ended stuff sack - 1.1oz Olive Brown ripstop (DIYGS)
Tie-outs - folded 1" grosgrain (local fabric outlet)
Misc - Drawcord, Cordlocks, Velcro, etc
Weight: hammock in stuff sack = 16.95oz (18.50oz with tree straps added)
Hammock body is 120" x 63" with 2" channel ends.
Note - the net and overcover are not removeable. Each one stores in it's own peak bag at the head and foot. They share a common zipper half on the hammock body.
One feature that was not shown is a small velcro tab at the head and foot end that mates with the end of the net and cover. This allows the net and cover to be partially unzipped, while being held in place by the velcro tab.
I may work on a removable version if someone orders it (hint, hint :D), but we would have to use a heavier #5 molded zipper. I'm thinking the extra weight of the zipper would cancel out any weight savings of a removeable net and cover.
Price is what we need :)
I love that hammock. :boggle: PapaSmurf you did a great job, and just like everyone else I am definitely wondering about the price.
HF is killing my bank account... :scared::scared:
Great work Papa Smurf.
Oh I forgot to offer an explanation on the name.
I jokingly told Rip that all of my projects come out different depending on materials, mood, music listened to, etc.
He asked that I listen to lots of Neil Young while making this one.
Danger Bird is the second song on side one of Neil Young's album Zuma.
Very nice work. Very cool video. Thanks for sharing.
glad papasmurf chimed in with the exact specs...
its a fine piece of hammock shelter-
i had not tested / thought of the velcro tab allowing the netting / cover
to remain in place - and failed to mention that... i'm gonna go hop
in it now and test it out. cool feature.
the great thing about working with randy is he will build to spec, and his construction is far and above. being a lighter weight dude... i opted for the lightest materials possible.
having only been on the vario stand, i may actually submit this one For Sale... i think i kinda want an all black one. after i get with papasmurf on cost, and how he'd want to handle it.... i'll repost here to this thread.
Cool hammock and so sorry about your greyhound!
Just when I thought there couldn't be another hammock for me to want (at least for some time) and you had to make a video of this one! Looks fantastic - would be really interested in the price (and, of course, shipping to Canada!:)).
Great review Rip! I am a jealous man. Sorry about your loss.
I am also interested in the price.
Nice work on the hammock. So sorry to hear about your pup.
Outstanding! I want one.
Really like the musical inspiration and the hammock. Multi-functional without being over engineered.
David
Awwsoooooooooooooooome!
That is a very cool hammock!
Sorry for the loss of your friend.
True ingenuity! I was wondering when the next big thing would come out, this seems like a good starting point.
BG
Very innovative as I would expect from Papa Smurf!
Nice trick with the zippers!
OK, I've answered all PM's and emails about this hammock. Thanks guys for your interest.
Some info for other folks who I haven't spoken with.
First, no business on HF, this is a place for sharing our ideas and working together.
Second, There are no set prices. Every project I do is one of a kind and the price mostly depends on materials used, features added and the time I think will be involved.
Having said that, I've calculated this hammock a whole bunch of different ways using various fabrics and such.
I can tell you that most of the single layers are coming out around $150, while most of the doubles have been in the neighborhood of $175.
Wow wow wow... you've finally done it. This is the breakthrough we've all been looking for Papasmurf! A fully integrated hammock - bug net AND top cover. I've made quite a few variations over the years with integrated netting/top cover solutions and this takes them all. I hope you don't mind the "highest form of flattery" coming to my next few personal hammock builds. Brilliant - absolutely brilliant. And plus, I think you use some really great materials... :)
Aw shucks
Please do take the idea further and share any successes with us.
Nice looking hammock. Brilliant idea to integrate bug net, weather shield, and open air into one hammock that way.
Sorry about your pup Rip :(
That is REALLY sharp!
Nice hammock!
thanks everyone for the condolences regarding our grey willow.
she was good girl -
hate to mix hammock fun with personal grievances.... but
its where i was at. that said, it was great to hang in the
new and awesome DangerBird remembering the trips we
took.
Great job PapaSmurf, very cool!!!
That is awesome man!
Now that I know it was Neil Young inspired, I really want one.
Good overview on an interesting option package.
Something like this could be my answer for everything I love about the Clark, minus the weight.
I Know where my next hammock is coming from.
Great job, Randy! Really nice hammock.
Thanks for the video, Rip. (Sorry for your loss.)
