clear roof tarp.

well i got bored. so i decided to make a tarp. i wanted something that was clear for the top, (doesn't everyone wanna see the stars laying in the hammock?) well i went and bought a clear shower curtain. and just so happens that i had some painters plastic laying around.

i knew the curtain wouldn't be long enough by itself so i just some of the painters plastic to make the tarp a total of 10'. im sure i could have gone bigger but i think this will do. i added sides to the bottom of what i made, they don't do much, but they don't weight much either! im thinking i need a few more tie outs on the bottom of them, and i will add doors as soon as i can, but with the wind we had last night, it worked out pretty well. i layed under it in my hammock for a few hrs just to see how nice it was.

Surprisingly the wind stayed off me more then i thought it would. but like i said, i need doors! i put it all together with some white duct tape. and found out that 1 roll was not enough!!! ah i had some silver laying around so i used it :/ rather have bought another roll of white tho.

overall i spent around 5 dollars. (thanks to having painters plastic laying around)

the tarp is 10' long and when staked out, its right at 4' wide.
the sides are 40" tall, wondering if if needed taller sides?

Ive done this for years. I use 3 ml plastic used to seal windows. Its marketed as house wrap, two roll for seven bucks at walmart. Each roll is ten by fifteen feet, so I get two tarps for seven bucks. I use tarp clips, they always tear at the grommet holes so I bought the clips a keep reusing them. Seeing the stars is a great bonus for me, I always carry my normal tarp as well. I I cant find a place to hang the plastic becomes my ground cloth. Since I use the same clips over and over each tarp cost me $3.50 and I have a piece left over to sit on by the fire.

nice, i found that just an extra layer of duct tape at the grommets keeps them from ripping.

Man....that's a tarp. :) You'll have to give us a gear review after you've been able to test it a time or two.

I will let yal know how well it hold up. Hope to use it sometime this week

Well I got mine rolled up at the moment. About the size of my eno profly. About the same weight too.

Very cool for a skylight. I'd go smaller for the clear area myself :blush:, and anyone around me would appreciate that as well :scared:. Great job.

cool tarp. I was wondering what you'd been cookin in there when I saw that plume of purple smoke (but it was your tarp skin :p )

well i slept with this tarp lastnight, rained all night and i stayed dry! not much wind but a little bit. im just happy i stayed dry all night! gonna go do it agian tonight! im proud of myself! yay!
