Because my daughters have almost a billion of them, and because I hate working with pins (one or two always escape, and I have a little one who is now crawling and puts everything in his mouth), I decided to give it a whirl. I will say, however, that for ease of use, the out-stretched staple method is awesome (if a bit wasteful). Line up and cha-chunk... all done. And because the staples aren't going back in on themselves they really aren't that much more difficult to remove than a pin. They still leave me with pointy metal things that my children will find a way to disperse all over my house, so until they move out--hair-clips.
