A few weekends ago I did a test night in my HH ASYM. I had just gotten a "Nest" quilt and a No Sniviler (sp?) from Jacks R Better and wanted to do a backyard test before I did a field test. The night was fine and everything worked well. The next day, my wife noticed what looked like bug bites all up and down my arm. They didn't itch and cleared up in about a week. Any idea what it was? Could I get bit through the hammock from the underside?
Yeah you could get bit, but you got it bad if it looked like a rash.
Just one arm? the one you slept on? Did you treat the hammock, wear something new for sleepwear, or sleep bare armed on a sleeping pad?
My oldest daughter slept with me in the hammock, she had the same thing on her arm and back. We were sleepiing in the hammock wihout a pad underneath us. I had an underquilt in the outside of the hammock but we had a blanket and a top quilt inside. No new PJ's
I'd be investigating ways to safely treat the yard and the bedding. The hammock can be sprayed down with permethrin to keep off the bugs. The only other thing I can think of would be a mild allergy to something. A cursory search turns up some anecdotal rashes related to silicone in medical appliances. Could be contact dermatitis.

I had roughly the same thing all around my bellybutton after camping about a month ago and wasn't sure of what it was... Poison ivy and sumac have never done anything to me so I was pretty sure it was bugs or a rash also. I was using a quilt that I don't usually use though, and I did wake up with my net flipped open. From how it looked and how long it took to fade I think I was bit by something that just lived to bite
could have been
1. bug bites
2. poison ivy
3 dermatitis
4. shingles
But if its gone, then no big deal, its gone
I thought I was nuts but the SAME thing happened to me.
I used my HH Safari twice during winter and had no problem.
Then on my last 2 kayaking trips this summer I woke up with lumps and itchy as anything especially on my bicep areas and my back.
The first time it happened I blamed mosquitos biting me through the fabric.
This last trip the lumps were anywhere I had contact with bare skin on my hammock.
I guess it didn't happen in winter because I was wearing fleece.
I went through half a tube of "Stop-itch" trying to get some relief. I ended up sleeping on the ground.
HELP! What can I do? I love my hammock!
A very similar thing happened to me on my first hammock camping trip in the USVI. No pad or UQ necessary, and my left arm and parts of my back/legs got flamed by mosquitos. I'm all about permethrin now, and haven't had a problem since.
