Black Friday hang at Black Rock Cliffs, MD

As the wife and friends get up early to go shopping on Black Friday this year, I'll be getting up early and heading to Washington Monument Park, MD. From there it's a short 6 mile hike North on the AT to Black Rock Cliffs where I'll set up, build a fire, read a book and enjoy the day.

I plan on reaching the parking lot at Washington Monument Park around 8-8:30 am. There is ample, free parking there. Then head on up the trail.

If you have the time and inclination, come on out. Great views from the cliffs there and Annapolis Rocks, which we'll pass on the way.

Do you plan on camping at the Pogo Campsite?
I planned on camping at Annapolis Rock on Friday but I won't be leaving until later that day. I'll be entering at the Route 40 trail head right there at the I-70 overpass

I was actually planning on hangin' right at the Black Rocks area. I hiked through there last week and saw some excellent area for hanging. Pogo Memorial Camsite doesn't offer the views we'll have from Black Rock. These spots are fairly close to each other. Hop on over to Black Rocks for a hang. It will be Black Friday afterall!

Washington Monument Park is only 3 miles on the AT from the I-70 footbridge.

This sounds interesting as I just re did my schedule to take that day off! I’m not far at all from Fredneck but I will have to google where the trailhead is and parking...

We will be hiking the 3 miles up to the I70 footbridge, across and up past Annapolis Rocks. If you wanted to park at the link you listed you could catch us as we rolled by. I'll be parking at:

If you are on 70, just follow the signs to Washington Monument Park at the Boonsboro exit. My wife programmed her GPS to get there awhile back, but said following the signs was easier.

I drive an Orange Saturn Vue - hard to miss, and will be at the parking lot between 8-8:30 depending on morning traffic (all them Black Friday shoppers)

** Fires are prohibited in this area until Dec 1 ** We will not be starting a campfire, so bring warm clothing to put on after hiking/set up.

I have thought about trying to do the maryland section of the AT around that time

Starting at Harpers Ferry
this would be along the way I Think?

My husband Russ and I could be interested in this hang!! How many days? Just black friday?? We could have friday AND saturday for this.:D

I was just going for the Friday. Leaving the parking lot at 8:30 am, 6 mile hike. Plenty of time to set up and enjoy the area. Sleep in Saturday morning, slowly make my way home.

Edit: I could be persuaded to stay Saturday night, if others were going to be there. Let me know!

I plan on attending. I'm flexible, possibly the decision could be made Saturday morning wether we remain or return home.

Simple enough,,, I'll pack food for 2 days.

There are options in this area. We could stay at Black Rocks, move over to Annapolis Rocks, or go back past Washington Monument to Rocky Run Shelter area. Just throwin' that out there.

I love how ideas and things just bloom and grow on this site!

Always room for more. The woods is full of trees to hang from! Glad to have more happy hangers come out!

There's a sign for Black Rock Cliffs right on the AT. We should be somewhere right around there Friday afternoon. Pretty easy to locate the bunch of us. Especially me with my orange hammock, orange UQ, orange whoopies, orange Dutch Clip, and orange Dutch Biner. :-)

I have the AT Map for Maryland, as well as the recent AT guide that I'll be bringing along. This should help in exploring the area and deciding where to hang for Saturday.

I'm also bringing Dejoha's Hammock Guide book. Lots of topic for discussion and sharing!

I wasn’t planning on bringing my dog but are they allowed? For this trip and in general in the area...? Koda shredded her good winter jacket so she’s not gonna be making any real cold trips anytime soon. lol

Dogs are allowed in this area. I expect the temps to be cold next week. So far things look clear - no rain. But the temps will be 53F-35F from what the forecast calls (looking at Boonsboro, MD - we'll be a bit higher in elevation, so expect a bit cooler temps)

As a note: Black Rocks is a dry site. There's water at the spring at Annapolis Rocks on the way, and Black Rock creek is 1/2 mile jaunt North - at Pogo Memorial Campsite. So we'll be near water, but not right at the site. I figure once we get settled I could collect bottles and make a water run. It's all good.

Temps are looking to run between 53F and 35F for the two days. So far clear skies, so the star viewing should be spectacular. I'm hoping to sit out on the rocks with a hot beverage and enjoy the sunset and watch the stars pop out!
