I was showing off my book at work today and the lady I was talking to said, "oh yeah, ham-mock, I know a ham-mock." made me think I was crazy.
quick and smooth, just like my set up. Ham-ick!
ham as in ham, mock as in mockery hammock
Ham-auck....my daughter loves it when I say it that way :)
I got to blame my Southern reering for my pronunciation of such a fantastical word as Ham-ick. :D
Hammuck, of course!
Because of this post I have repeated the word 'hammock' out loud at least a hundred times--I am really no closer to determining how I say it, and most of my family is staring at me like I'm insane.
The more I hear myself say it the more inclined I am to think the answer is none of the above. I think I say it like the truly linguistically lazy American that I am--with a schwa in the last syllable... ham-uck. This from the guy that says 'water' like wah-der.
I'm always happier NOT thinking about how I say things.
Hem-ick
or is it he-am-ick
Some of ya'll up there call a creek a crik.. so I reckon a hammock can be a hamic....
Hamick in Kansas where I grew up. have heard -ock before but rarely.
I won't get mad if you say it funny.
"Ham-ock" but the o is a very short o sound, almost but not quite like an i in the word "ick". Now how do you say hawk like "haak" or is there a w still in it?
Had to sit here and say it to myself over and over to figure it out.
hangmat or 吊床 we can try Hängematte
 I've been playing with google translate
I'm one of those dang yankees in SC but its ham-mik for me.
Like shotgunred I pronounce it hammuck...like muck; turn my ham into muck from layin' in my ham-muck.
Yep, Ham-mick must be a eastern/southern thang.
Ham ick for me
+1 Ham-muck
I voted Ham-auck - assuming the auck makes the muck sound.
Ham-mik it has to be fast, roll off the tongue... like one syllable.
Say it on video, then have a few beer and try again..
I say it similar to "ham-uck".
For me: ham-mk, said quickly of course! it's probably a Yorkshire thing :)
Now, if you save up a load of flem... and the pronounce the H...you will have to go through the TSA line twice.......
Ham-Auk
so my 10 yr old daughter teases me and says
"Hamoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooook "
I voted ham ick, but upon reflection, I think I say ham uck
Ham-ick....cause like the -ick part.
Shu-g
I say "Hængekøje"!...... But that is of course on danish. In English i say "Ha-mock" kind a like Amok!:D
Hamhocker got her trail name by asking me on a trip where I knew all of these hamhockers from
HA m-muck A strong HA rolling into an "m" and then "muck"
The votes from southerners like myself may be meaningless. The written word does not always have a direct correlation with the spoken word.
For example, I pronounce pen and pin the same.
With no intended humor they were always referred to as "a stick pin" or "an ink pen".
No telling what we mean when we say we pronounce it ham ick or ham ock.
For that matter, no telling how many syllables we use.
I guess ham-uck is how I say it.
Hammick, hamick, or hamuck depending on my Tourettes syndrome at the moment.
Its 'Amuk round my way.
The queen would say " Hair-muck".
sides all dis... hammicfourems.net dont look rite
I'm going with ham-mik since my 'm' is a little on the long side.
In the south we don't pronounce anything else like the rest of the country, why should Hammock be different?
Fire=faar
Boil=bol
Foil=fol
I dont have the ear for it, but I love when people can pick out your exact part of the south from your dialect. I have even had my county pinned correctly. BTW where I'm from boil is pronounced ball not bol. As in I love balled peanuts.
Definitely hamik,
stress on the first syllable,
and the second vowel is just a nothing of a sound, barely even a "schwa" (i.e.the unstressed sound like the "a" of "about").
It's almost hamk.
Tomato, tomato...hey wait that doesn’t make any sense now that I typed it out.
I say ham-ick, and my father says ham-hock ( and laughs every time).
I say Ha-mick
Ham-ick ... because it's simple, smooth and easy ... but according to the dictionary types ... I "be wrong" :woot:
Merriam-Webster Pronunciation
It's "Ham-mick".
What do those folks at Websters know anyway? (They probably sleep in tents, when they go "hike-in" and "camp-in"). And let's not even get started on the fact that there's actually only one "p" in "Punk-in".
I say Ham-mik most of the time. It fluctuates with my mood i guess. I do make the double m sound though. I don't mind leaving off a letter at the end of the word (hike-in) but please don't leave out the 'L' in wolf... it drives me nuts.
I have decided this is how it kinda sounds when I say it...Haam-ock, once again being from the south I'm sure what i think it sounds like and what it actually sounds like is completely different. Around here a gud ole suthen gentelmaan, has no need for tha letta "r" in most words.... and lots of long aaaaa's.
