To use Chain Links or Not..?

Once again I come to you oh wise gurus of Hammock Forum! I'm looking to make a couple of easy to use cinch buckle (onrope1) suspension systems for cheap. I was wondering if the amsteel chain links are necessary or if a piece of amsteel tied into a loop is strong enough. I know the knot will degrade the strength but I'm going to cheap and I figure enough even with the knot the amsteel will be strong enough... so my real question is whether or not the amsteel (tied into a loop) is too slippery to hold a Larks Head onto the end of the hammock? Thanks so much!

Strong enough sure though how much you degrade strength is dependent on a lot of factors. But amsteel is not made or intended to hold knots which can slip and fail. Amsteel is made specifically to be spliced. Ferarri are not built for the same use as minivans ;) you can load the minivan up with the whole soccer team but once you get it over 140mph your going to have some freaked out kids. Same problem when that knot slips some night at 3am when your totally comatose, it will probably freak you out a bit. :lol:

You'd be as well splicing it and not degrading the strength of the rope, it's not very difficult to do if you've got some wire and a knitting needle. I was surprised at how easy it was! Plus doing it yourself is free.

I assume you're asking about making a continuous loop by tying the amsteel instead of splicing it.

I have done this several times using a double fisherman's knot and haven't had any problems.

It is also easy to splice your own continuous loops.

Awesome, thanks for all the replies! The continuous loop does look pretty easy, but I plan on making a lot of these for sale so I was hoping there might be a quicker way (knotting) to get a loop. So, are there any ropes that knot well that is possibly cheaper than amsteel? Also, regarding the Larks End on the end of the hammock, has the amsteel ever been known to come loose or slip from the end of the hammock? Thanks!

I've used these in various sizes for hanging & ridge lines that are not totally structural.
