Darn GrannyPat, first a tree tries to fall on you, and now the fireants have sent an army after you. :scared: I have to make sure I never hang near you.
Conveniently enough, Junebugdawn posted some Permethrin on the PIF forum just a minute ago...
But I don't snore as loud as some other hangers. :D I also got up last night to pee and sat back down on the underquilt instead of the hammock. Hit the ground, got leaves on my fleece jammies Ever tried to get leaves off of fleece? I am just a comedy of errors. :D
Actually I can't wait to hang with you again. Maybe you can make the next SC hang. Maybe we can help you with hanging.
Thanks. I'm trying to get to the mountains before it gets too cold for my gear, but I might be able to make a Nov. hang. I'll watch the trip planning thread. Maybe I can convince my husband to come with me again. He would be much happier if it is cooler next time.:D
Be an interesting experiment for someone with access to Fireants, put some Permethrin on a piece of paper and put it by the nest and see if they walk on it. I wonder if they would just think it is a condiment.
It kills them within 5-10 seconds generally, I've used it on mounds before. A month or two later you can tell where you put it out their lines go around the area.
Yep, done it twice in 6 years when using a green Claytor No Net surrounded by a green Pea Pod. Just flipped right over flat on my back.
So Granny, join the club!
But wait: GrannyPat, I see you use an HH bottom entry. I did not know this could happen with that hammock? Looks like I am wrong again!
I did it with my DIY gathered hammock. My HH was sent to Hennessey for repair after the falling tree incident. I just got the ship notice. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=60808
Yep, but that's nothin'. Ever have to get burrs off socks, t-shirt, and knit gloves?!!! Now you're talkin' PATIENCE and PERSEVERANCE!!!
I wuz down your way last weekend under BEAUTIFUL blue, sunny skies. Here's proof (a photo of the Clemson scoreboard at the end of the game):
Rain Man
P.S. I even saw in the paper that my old high school (Wren) played "West-Oak," a school that didn't exist when I was in high school.
.
I still can't figure out what the ants were doing up there. No food up on the tarp. There was a line of ants the entire length of the ridgeline and a big bunch of them on one of the tree straps. Maybe they were eating the permethrin?
Grannypat, would you share with me your permethrin treatment process?I have yet to find it on here and I didn't know this could be done to equipment.
I buy Sawyers spray in the camping section at Walmart and spray it on my gear, including whoopies and tree straps. I let it dry. Some people mix it up in a bucket and dunk their stuff. This stuff causes neurological problems in cats when wet, so I always make sure mine are in the house before I spray and don't let them out until it is dry. Because I spray everything, I should probably get a concentrate and dilute it--would probably be cheaper. I know there is at least one thread on permethrin and I'll see if I can find it.

I can get concentrate from http://youkill.com/ it's across the county from me.
This is one of the links. I actually searched using the term "deet" because permethrin is often misspelled and when anyone askes about deet, which is not good for hammocks, etc., permethrin will come up in the replies.

grannypat, Do you have a Tractor Supply near you? If so here is a link to some concentrate
I spray my tarp, hammock & tree straps as well. (Along with all my clothes, hat and shoes.) In fact I just got two more bottles in the mail from REI yesterday to recoat everything before my big hike next month. I don't do bugs.
I hang my stuff from a clothes line and spray both sides then let it sit for a day to dry.

I don't mean to be fussy, but you do realize that by spraying your tree straps, you are killing every little critter that goes up and down the tree trunks, even if they would never detour to get on your hammock.
I spray or soak my hammock for the mosquitoes, but my tree straps? No. But, ... of course hike your own hike.
Rain Man
.
Rain Man is right and not to belabor the issue, please be aware of the toxicity of this stuff and in particular don't use it around bodies of water or streams. It's extremely toxic to fish.
I know people spray their yards and stuff like that, but personally I like bugs except for when they're trying to eat me. You never know what you're killing...
at least they aint chiggers those things are the devil trust me i know i had a bunch of em visit me while i was sitting on the ground in 2007 when i was over in west virginia and i aint been back since LOL!!!!
as long as the chiggers don't get ya you'll be fine LOL!!!
