Ok I've read a lot of posts suggesting 83% etc... I tried that and it's too short for me. I just measured mine and its right about 90% of the whipping-to-whipping length. I thought for a bit i was WRONG - that somehow because I was a noob, that 83% was gospel and i'm deformed in someway ;)
Anyways, let's post your personal % to see how 'average' that 83% really is !!!
It's a personal preference, and a good place to start. Nothing 'gospel' about it though.
It also matters how wide the hammock is. It needs to be wide enough to allow a steep diagonal.
83% is comfortable for me on multiple hammocks.
My exped scout is 127" long....ridge line is 118"
I like 93%
I've made 3 hammocks in the last month 2 were nylon and one was polyester.
The 2 nylon ones were most comfortable at 87%
The poly one (no stretch) was most comfortable at 81%
Of the two nylon hammocks, one was 67" wide and ther other 60" wide, both 11' long.
The poly one was 60" wide and 10.3' long.
At this point in my experience, I'm thinking that the material type has the biggest impact on the way a hammock feels, including ridgeline length.
83% has worked for me but it's not gospel.
83% works for me.allthough i came by that figure useing my own math,so who knows what it really is.i have never adjusted it,3 hammocks now.i am afraid i will find an even more comfortable lay.i allready fall asleep to fast and sleep to long in it.if it was more comfortable?
Just to confirm you measure the distance between the whipping laid flat and then i would measure it with someone else in it for what is comfortable for me?
You could make an adjustable ridgeline and then dial it in easily - no messy calculations.

I don't know exactly what my "sleep number" :P is, but it's definitely lower than 83%. I make my ASRs with about 1 foot of play on either side of 83%, and I keep mine close to the shortest it'll go. So, probably in the 78% range.

Do what makes you feel comfortable. There is no scientific study that brought about the 83% rule of thumb. I like mine shorter.
I played and played with an adjustable ridge line until it was perfect for me. I then tied a piece of zing it into a ridgeline of that exact length, so I would have the perfect fit for me. Measured it one day - exactly .83. I am not a unique little snowflake. 10 ft 1.0 hyperD with way too much weight in it BTW.
Isn't 83% the perfect snowflake? Don't count yourself short. Sounds like an awesome setup.. I just wish I could find my happy place.. It's seems illusive to me.Quote:

Yes, adjusting the CLR does affect the suspension angle in a hung hammock. You just have to look and see if it's enough to worry about.Quote:

I thought so.. if the below conditions where met...
-you hang your ridgeline not too tight or too slack
-the trees aren't eons apart
-you have the intent of recreating a 30 degree hang
-you are hanging a standard gathered end hammock
Waz thinking... once you exceeded say a certain ridgeline % you could by default be missing the 30 degree hang consistently?
Eg. A ridgeline at 100% (same length of hammock) would most likely not get you a 30 degree hang angle.
Could there be a math-matical % of ridgeline that might indicate you are undercutting the hang angle(less than 30)? Perhaps that is 83%? There is a correlation right? Or, am I missing something? Can anyone help with the math of that:confused:

There is no default % that will undercut your angle. None. Yes, you can adjust the angle by adjusting the CRL, but this is counter to the point of having a CRL and you should only ever need to if your suspension isn't long enough.Quote:

It doesn't matter how long or short your SRL is, the angle can be adjusted to 30 by letting out or tightening up the suspension. Your only real limitations for angle adjustment is how high your tree straps are and how far apart the trees are. This is true for a 0" SRL or no SRL.
It's basic trigonometry. You would need a measuring tape to get some other measurements, but the measurements will be different on every hang and a calculator with sin, cos, and tan functions and know how to use it. Of course, you could learn how to do it with paper and pencil because trig was invented way before calculators. But it's way easier to just look at the angle and then adjust your suspension and only worry about CRL length for comfort or if you run out of suspension length and don't have closer trees.Quote:

I won't profess to get it still but at least I will have a reference to read once in a while when I want to ponder this further. Set my RL ( I think it's a Structured one if I have the acronym right) to 89% for now but I am sure that will change. Now just to repeat the tuning of my jammock and RL... cuz to me the whole is one big musical instrument. :laugh:

for a few inches either way... so far so good.
TW XL 3m hammock. 2.59m SRL. 86.3%

So one thing I've never figured out and what might effect the comfort of other peoples hangs, should the 30° angel be before or after I get in the hommock?:-)
I'm fine with the 83% on my WB BBXLC, but I like it to be a little slack rather than taught. If I was using an adjustable SRL then I'd probably be aiming for around 80%

Measured last night...turned out to be pretty tightly hung at 115", which is almost 90% of my Dutchware... which set alarm bells off.. so I completely re arranged my room and re-hung the hammock with help from the hang calculator and BOY has my lay improved! Ridgeline pop's a nice low bass note at exactly 83%, no calf ridge, not super tight, not dangling loose.
