sleeping bag as top quilt

I picked up one of these down sleeping bags at Sierra Trading Post:

Description says has a full zip and no hood. I plan to use it as is for a top quilt. Later I may remove the zipper. Also might remove some extra material on the sides (description says it's 60" at the shoulders). That should take a couple of ounces off. (description says 25 ounces)

Uh awesome find - no need to modify it - I occasionally still use a zipper if it gets below 40 degrees.

That's a great find!. I love my UQ but all my TQ's are sleeping bags due to cost of replacing what I already have.

Same here. Is like to have a nice TQ, but can't justify the cost. Maybe with Moe sewing experience ill try making one.

Good deal! I know they say "never say never" but I don't think I'll ever get a TQ. (see, I didn't say "never")

There's just something about getting into a fresh change of clothes, jumping in the mummy sleeping bag and zipping it up tight around your head. If you've ever had a Marmot sleeping bag, you know exactly what I mean. And you can kick, roll, move all you want and there will be no drafts :)

I think i will probably end up just using it as is.
I do like the idea of having the option to zip it up.

I currently use a Eureka Casper women's tall bag - usually opened up like a quilt. It's about 3 pounds and rated to 15 degrees.
I like it, but the hood can get in the way.
I was happy to have that bag when I had to bring my dog into the hammock a couple of months ago due to the wind - it was plenty wide enough to cover us both (she's about 70 pounds).

It will be nice to have this lighter bag for warmer weather outings.

I purchased a Wegner 30 Averstal from Seirra trading post for the same price. Excellent bags. The pertex is super nice fabric. It compresses pretty small.

If you do remove some side material, say about 6", that means you have the same amount of down in a smaller area (assuming you don't lose much down in the transformation), so you may find it will be warmer than the 45F rating. However, part of the warmth rating is the height of the baffles, so you won't be able to get much change, but you should find some warmth benefit to the now "overstuffed" down bag.

Great buy! I often use a sleeping bag, mostly unzipped, as a top quilt and my largest complaint is what to do with the hood. A bag like this, at just 25 oz and $110 is a nice find.

By the same token, part of the warmth of a bag versus a TQ is being able to use the hood and seal it up.

Great Find!! I did remove zippers off our bags, just due to the fear of the zipper doing damage to the hammock when tucking under the shoulders.

I've used my Kelty Cosmic 20-degree down bag in my hammock with no problem--and I am using it the normal way, too. It took a bit to get the 'hang' of it, but once you do, it works just great. Perhaps the generous interior size of my WBBB helps in this regard...at any rate, I was really glad to know I wouldn't have to buy a top quilt right away!

I've never had a problem using my bags as quilts. The hood either ends up under my head as a kind of pillow, or put over my head if the temperature dives.

Thats a nice bag! I picked up a Sierra Designs Ridge Runner 15 degree down bag, in long its just under 3 pounds, way lighter than my old winter bag haha. I paid $110 from backcountry.com with discount around the holidays. I have seen a few sea to summit bags locally as well on sale.

I agree. I have a Marmot Plasma 20 and its the most comfortable bag ever. I love the hood and the foot box is very roomy. I plan on sticking with it for a while. I wouldn't give up the hood on really cold nights. Makes a huge difference in staying warm and comfy. They aren't cheap. I paid $509 for mine but I'm still very happy with my purchase.

I couldn't pass up the Sierra Design Ridgerunner 30* Long down bag for $120. 2lb5oz. That for the TQ and the Leighlo 30* 2/3 UQ my Wife got me for Christmas should keep me nice and toasty!! About the hood, I usually find a way to bunch it up and make use of it as a pillow. Why I always get a long bag though I am only 5"11":thumbup:

I grabbed the same one this year. I've had it down to 25* a few times now and been a little too warm!

I've been using my Montbell bag in my hammocks for years. I've never had any damage at all.

I left my cabelas boundary waters bags in tact. I can use the bag in my HH as normal, as a TQ, and use it for camping in my popup...

Options and variety is the spice of life... and I happen to be cheap too.

I used scissors :D Then rolled the edges over twice real small and stitched.

The Thremarest Top Heaven is what I use. No zippers just elastic through the back. Plus it has a hood works for me. 20* down bag.
