These are great ideas! Keep them rolling in.
Ideas so far:
- Knots
- Insulation
- How to pitch a tarp
- Over night camping requirement
- Site selection
- First Aid
- History
- Woo Buddy! (Might require a visit from Shug to approve)
What about:
- Different kinds of hammocks
- DIY hammock
- Taking your hammock to the ground
PS: Our new troop logo is of a hammock hanging in the mountains. We might use that as the Merit Badge graphic :D
how have you gotten past the buddy system for sleeping? My son just crossed over and his troop is pretty resistant to allowing the use of a hammock.
It could start out as an up date to the camping merit badge.
add a ''leave no trace'' portion to teach the benefits of hammock camping over camping in tents.
Include a requirement about knowing and following (local) regulations which may prohibit the use of trees and thus hammocks.
I would ask "why" they are resistant and have them explain what they percieve is the intent of the buddy sleeping rule and then work on solutions to meet that intent.
I would think that two hammocks on three trees with one tarp should meet the buddy system for sleeping requirement.
Site selection should note prevailing wind direction, location of game trails, distance from ridgelines and streams, too.
By the way, what are some typical hammock related injuries? I got a bad bump once when my suspension slipped, but that's all I recall. A pre-hang safety check of suspension, tarp, and bugnet would be a good idea.
Inspect site for LNT when breaking camp.
Sleep in your hammock on 5 separate camping trips.
Describe the benefits of hammock camping.
Demonstrate how to properly hang a hammock and how hanging it properly does not damage the trees being used.
Learn the LNT principles and use these principles on 3 campouts. Recite and describe the LNT principles to your patrol.
All the replies are great, can't really add too much to what has been already said! One thought though, is adding sub-categories to the list, ie..
How to hang your hammock system: (includes tarp/hammock/insulation) for fair weather and foul weather! Hanging your system while it's pouring down rain is just a little different (or tougher to get right/perfect) than when it's nice and sunny!
Other's can be added to the already made comment's (list) and would make for a good general understanding of Hanging and what it takes!
