using ascenders for suspension

I have recently begun using my petzel ascenders in conjunction with a biner as my suspension . The ascenders bite into the ropes at both ends (see pictures) and are easily adjustable. Simply tie a figure8 in the end of your line , run it around the tree or through your webbing and connect to the ascender which hangs on your line. When the line is tight it pulls the biner backwards into the smaller part of the groove in the ascender and pinches the line holding every thing tight. By pushing on the biner it slides forward with no resistance to tighten your hang, and when loosening simply slide biner forward and lift rope up and away from teeth. Not for everyone I'm sure but just another option maybe overlooked and extremely light weight as well.:rolleyes:

That certainly is an interesting application of climbing hardware for a hammock suspension. I would think that over time the compression of the rope between the carabiner and the ascender (looks like a Petzel Tibloc ascender) would cause issues.

That is the Tibloc Brian. There have been a few folks use them here before....the killer is it won't grip on the smaller, lighter lines that most of us use for suspensions. That looks like the stock HH suspension lines...which is on the low end of what a Tibloc will grab onto. Some time back I check with some of my old contacts at Petzl about making a smaller Tibloc for hammock suspension use...they were not interested.

Keep an eye on it for rope wear...any slip of the Tibloc would shred that smaller cord.

It will no doubt eventually force me to replace my ropes but its an easy enough operation to do and so far im quite enjoying the ease of adjustment and set up. And yes they are tiblocs :)

It is stock suspension and so does grab very well so far, smaller tiblocs would be ideal though!
I also think i could use my dremel to make the trough a little deeper to allow it to grab onto smaller lines, might be an interesting experiment at the very least.

I use a daisy chain on one end as a tree strap. It seems the ascended would work, but your using what 9-10 mil rope and a 1lb ascending unit. Get some woopies. Ps. Anyone want to buy a porta ledge double, with rain fly?

No i dont think its 10 mm rope, think it may be 8mm? And the ascenders weigh next to nothing really.

I've also got the big petzel asccenders but they are too big and bulky to use effectively, are these what you had thought i was using? I use the very small tiblocs no bigger than a zippo lighter and even less weight than that :-)

Yes. Those r newer and probably lighter.
Mine have a few miles on them, as you can see.
