A shorter route with the possible use of snowshoes can overcome that. Odds are pretty slim that the snow depth will build that much in the next two weeks. An 18 inch post hole is manageable. It's the darned 48 inch ones that start slowing you down.

Using 3-season gear will require some adaptation to try Roan in January. Most will take gear that is good to at least 10 degrees below the forecasted low. This would be especially the case if you've been beaten up all day which causes one to sleep colder than usual.
I am still thinking about giving it a go. Let me know f any one goes I may be up to giving it a try. If I get to cold I can always head for the truck. Have 4x4 and have driven up there in some pretty crazy snow and weather before. Did stay in the shelter cabin one night snow and in the teens been a while back though.

I might be in. Have to look at the schedule. Remember to seal everything in mouse proof containers at that shelter. :-)

Has anyone hung a hammock in the high knob shelter ? If it's really bad I would like to hang I don't to the ground well !
