There's a merit badge for hanging now?
We have a troop of 40; 8 of whom are now in hammocks. I hope never to buy another 50-pound patrol tent. It's better for two deep leadership, it's better for hiking your own hike and it's a vast reduction in chatter and fart jokes after lights out.
I'm the 3rd to take the plunge in my troop. I'd imagine that the more trips we do, and the more scouts see it, the more will transition.
We do a couple of backpacking trips a year...after schlepping my tent (and way too much gear) on the last one, I'm looking forward to the spring trip with my GT Ultralight. (my hanging gear weighs more than the hammock.)
would it be possible to get the requirements for this un-official merit badge?
With as big as my son's troop is, I would think plenty of scouts would be interested.

i am having the same issues with my sons troop. they the other scoutmasters keep telling him he cant do it. violates the buddy rule. the worst one they use is that he will be cold. last meeting the talk was on winter camping and staying warm. my so raised his hand and said thats simpole use a full uq. i loved it and the looks he got wow. so i bought a coppy of the ulta met hang by derek my hero to give the scoutmaster tomarrow at our campout at trappers in newton ks. i dont want to cause waves in our troop. but both my son and i will be loyal hangers in the piney woods. if any other scouters out there know of a hard and fast no hammock rules in scouts please let me know before i make the tent croud mad.
They used Hennessy hammocks at national jamboree. Promoted them at NOAC. The appeared in at least one national scouting publication.
