Wider hammock needs a wider UQ?

Would I need to purchase a wider UQ if I get a wider (72") hammock?

Haven't seen it discussed, but common sense seems to say the UQ should be wider than normal if the hammock is wider than normal.

Am I overthinking this?

No, not overthinking, just coming at it the wrong way. The quilt is to keep you warm, not the hammock. The trick is to use non-traditional approaches to uq suspension so that the quilt is where you are. That said, I don't have any experience with the wide body hammocks, and can't make any specific recommendations.

Ultimately, the UQ needs to fit you and keep you warm. No real correlation between the hammock width and the UQ width. An ill fitting UQ will not work regardless of how wide or narrow the hammock is.

I made an 11' long by 8' wide hammock this past weekend and was able to use my 3/4 poncho liner UQ under it with no problems. I've not gotten any wider, just my hammock ;) and it actually sealed up better than in my ENO DN.

On another night, since it was colder, I tried my make shift UQ that I made out of PE floor padding, double layer and same results, it worked great and it also sealed up better than on my Eno DN. Speaking of which, that particular UQ I thought was a total failure due to its lack of sealing and this was it's last try before I was going to throw it out. Now I'm going to keep it as a back up for these wider hammocks. It's a bit bulky, but weighs next to nothing.

I hope that simplistic theory about me not getting wider and just my hammock sticks, as I'll be making our 3/4 down UQ as soon as my material gets here and I did not figure in making them any wider than the usual when I ordered my material :eek:.

Just remembered...I hung both types of UQ off my hammock ridgeline with long prusiks, and not the ends of the hammock. There was not enough shock cord on them for that length of hammock.

Thanks to all for the tips and for straightening out my thought process. The trick will indeed be to come up with some type of asymmetrical suspension system to keep the UQ lined up to my body and not the hammock. I've seen a video somewhere that talks about it. Now I understand the need a bit more.

I can see now the next craze in UQ suspension technology - neodymium disc magnets!
