For the January campout, do you have a system that you'd feel comfortable hiking into single digits with? Would you rather hike in for the beautiful scenery, drive up to an established site so you have access to backup gear, or does it matter?

I would like to hike in, but not too far. As I would have to carry a lot of gear to get into single digits! We don't get single digits here in AR very often, so I really don't have a specific setup for that.
I think a drive in spot would be nice because it would allow people to bring more gear for show-and-tell. If we are hiking in to a camp spot I'm going to carry the minimum amount of gear that I can.
It would be nice if we were at a place where day hikes are possible also.
Just something to think about.
Given the time of year a drive up might be better. Has a location been determined yet?
I choose I want to hike im but would go either way.
I see both as being good options. I like hiking in the cold weather and snow as long as I don't need snow shoes.
my tent setup can go to -5° or 15° depending on which bag I use. My 15° setup (tent, pad, bag) weighs 4.8 lbs. If I use my -5° bag it changes to 6.5 lbs.
If you go to RRG there are places to camp a 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the road. Lots of trees and tent sites.
Guess you can see I will not be in a hammock.

Try your pad in the hammock with your sleeping bag overtop you.
Don't want to turn this thread into a discussion on weights, but here are two hammock systems lighter than yours for 0F. It can be done...just a question of whether or not you want to go thru the effort.
Risk's setup:
23.4 - WarmHammock w/ 2" insulation, TravelPod, suspension
11.0 - Homemade Tarp
24.5 - Homemade Quilt
04.0 - Stakes/line*
63 oz total - 3 lbs 11 oz - 1786 g
Gardenville's Setup:
16.9 - Silk Speer w/ Bugnet
12.8 - Custom MacCat Tarp
01.8 - Stakes/line
23.0 - Homemade Down Air Mattress
23.0 - Homemade Down Top Quilt
77.5 oz total - 4 lbs 13 oz - 2197 g
fine, I will skip the campout. If you don't hammock it sure seems like you are a outcast even when trying to learn.
Who was treating you like an outcast? I think neo's comment was a joke, and I just posted some weights to show you that it can be done for lighter if you're willing to put forth the effort...both of those setups use homemade gear.
Seriously - you should come. We're all about being friendly here...no one will treat you like an outcast. We might even let you check out our hammocks as long as you promise to give them back at bedtime. :D
:D he can try my hammock but hillary clinton is mine,i aint sharing her:cool: neoQuote:

Where is this shin-dig goona be?
:o
yep... i`ve been to the mt rogers area for a couple chilli trips (pre-hammock).
one oct, it got down to 14f by morn w/ a howling wind, 1-2" of snow & lots of ice.
i went in feb one year & it got down to -6f by morn, w/ several inches of snow & a howing wind.
one thing about it, you just want to watch the weather systems that are going on for a paticular time frame & don`t forget the advice given by ed speer & other experianced hammockers... first thing you`ll want to think about is... location, location, location. (notice that patern w/ mt rogers & other high & exposed places... howling wind?).
there are more protected places in the mt rogers area, were you can still get nice clod temps. and if a real cold front is moving through that weekend, there are great places to camp a thousand or more feet lower than the highest places there. of course... same probably applys to most any other area too.
BTW... yall may want to think about 2 or more seperate trips for this group since there`s no way every one`s going to be able to get to the same location. afterwards we can exchange notes. ...tim
[B]where is this campout suppose to take place?i have been hammocking for 3 yrs, but everytime i come out to hang the temps hae been in the warm side. even tho i do tend to backpack between oct and april.
i just added a down mat to my set up.[/Bi sleep warm.]
I vote hike in, but (for safety reasons) not very far. Say a mile or so, that way if it's too cold for whoever & the gear isn't sufficiant you/we/me/they can bail out to the safety of a nearby car heater.
Doctari.
Looks like most folks want to hike in at least a short distance, and no one says they will only go if we don't hike. Sounds like hiking it is.
Nate, have you narrowed down the location yet?
I have no idea. I heard suggestions for Mt Rogers and Red River Gorge in KY.
Does anyone else have any good suggestions?
In RRG you have lots of places to tent or hammock. It is basically the same drive time for me. I have been to Mt Rogers quite a bit and going back over Turkey Day so I might be getting burned out on it
I'll start another thread looking for suggestions on Places to go.
pine grove state park in pa.,for us hangers north of harpers ferry or some where in newyork state as someone else suggested.
I had PC problems and didn't get a new thread started.
How does this sound? Everyone suggest places and we start another poll on the final place. I'm thinking someplace towards the mid Atlantic states would allow the most people to go.
I'll go ahead and put the Red River Gorge out as one of the options.
my vote`s still on mt rogers area, va. ...tim
I will start a "Place to have the campout" thread now.
Doctari.
My vote is for somewhere in the Catskills or the Daks
Still voting for Mt Rogers.... Who is making this decision anyway???
Pan
Good question. I'll start a final poll with the option of Mt Rogers, Red River Gorge, and somewhere north and see what everyone wants.
