Nice!
You may want to mention thats on a Hennessey.
Thanks Opie. Oh yeah, that conversion is on a Hennessy! :)
Looks great!
Question about the stitching on the closed eye...
Is it necessary to run the stitches several inches down the bury as shown or will several stitches close to the the entry point suffice?
For that matter, are the stitches in the closed eye necessary at all in this application since the bury is wrapped as part of the knot on the hammock?
Thanks for the video. I like your wire fish-tape.
Great video demonstration. I'm new to whoopie slings but did a lot of eye splices in braided nylon rope in scouts. Very nice touch with the backsplice. I want to convert my HH over to this system for easy of set up. Is that Amsteel Blue? 3/16"? Thanks for sharing.
stumo
WoW that turned out really good Ken ... nicely done. Like the music too!
That camera rig does the trick pal!
Think I like the idea of more stiches to lock it ... personally.
That wire rig works great.
This really makes the whole Whoopie rig clear and understandable! Well done pal.
Great video Ken! :thumbup1:
Jerry
Nice video with a fun soundtrack.
And you even gave me credit for how to attach the whoopie to a Hennessy. Thanks.
Very nice. Thanks for the lesson.
Thanks for all the nice comments everyone!
Thanks,
Yes, I think I would still give it some stitching. It's simple and fast. Just a few in and out stitches, then turn the cord 90 degrees and do a few more. There is a good diagram in one of Sampson's pdf files.
Thanks stumo, that is 7/64" amsteel. 1/8" works well also.
Thanks Michael. I failed to give credit to PacoWarabi in the credits. I used his "Tabletop Demonstrator" and camera mount described in his youtube vids and on his blog. Thanks Paco!!
Thanks Knotty! Credit where credit is due!! Works great!
Thank you Mule. I have really enjoyed your videos.
Ken
Nice demo Ken that tool you are using looks handy. The whoopie aint only great its damm addictive to make.
Those are some talented Whoopie Slinging hands that I just watched .......
Like the pull through wire. Gotta try that.
Great video Ken.
Shug
Nice video production. Great music!!
Whoopies are addictive.
HB and I are taking to the woods today and tonight to field test Whoopie/UCR suspensions and the new Dynaglide tarp tie-outs. Really curious whether we'll be breaking ice, plodding through snow, tromping in the mud or all of the above.
Thanks. Yes, just a simple piece of music/hobby wire doubled over, makes a great tool.
Thanks Shug! Had my old rough voice in the first version. Couldn't stand to listen to it. Hands and music are better. Folks say they are visual learners anyhow. Seasons Greetings to ya!
Ken
Ken, that was a wonderful and very helpful video!
...A real 'scalp saver'! (I can stop scratching my head wondering now!) :D
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks Ken.
That makes it all very clear.
We got one pair of WhoOpieSlings for Christmas.
Your video helps convince my husband that he will want a pair.
thanks Ken. I've not shown any videos of me doing the bury stuff because, ah, I've been using a 2 inch yarn needle, and it ain't pretty. But after seeing you run your lines as pretty as you please, I'm heading to the music shop to buy me a guitar string.
Kudos to Knotty for thinking through the "how do you thread this through the HH holes problem", and to you for showing it so clearly. Close to the top of my hammock projects is modifying my bezippered-so-with-new-life HH Explorer. You guys just wrote the script.
Grizz
Great video Ken! You've saved me again! My fingers were getting sore and blistered from the soft melted rope (trying to keep the ends from unraveling) :crying  Now I know of a better way!
About how long (diameter?) is the fixed eye end suggested to be for the WS to be used on the HH that Knotty suggested?
Thanks Grizz. You'll like using the music wire. About .025 to .030 works well.
Knotty's system for attaching works well too. I have one done with the the original knot pattern that I'll be going back and changing.
Hey Glen. I'm glad that will be of help to you. You inspired me to do it. Like Opie said, the size of the eye isn't really critical in this application. 1 inch or so and up should work fine. Hope to see you soon.
Ken
I just installed my WS on a HH Exped Deluxe and the vid made it so easy even I could do it.
Next is on with fiddin round
:)
Thanks Ken
Tom
You're welcome Tom. I'm glad it helped. I followed the UCR/Whoopie discussions from day one, but the real thanks goes to all those guys who got it started and worked out the details. ZA206, Frawg, TeeDee and a number of others I can't think of at the moment. And Slowbro for his first tutorial. My personal thanks goes to all those folks!
Ken
Great video. It just might be the first one I actually watched end-to-end. Most I can't make it through a few seconds without wanting to poke my eyes out.
Did you "mark" and/or cut the outer layer of the cord as described in the Whoopie Sticky thread? I assume you did, but it wasn't shown in the video.
MODERATORS: Please change the thread's title to something like "HH to Whoopie Conversion".
Great video, very easy to understand and follow. Now I need to order some line .
You guys are getting expensive. Hammocks, flies, whoopie slings, The Kelly Kettle on another thread . Where does it all stop.
When the money dries up Tbone ... then we sell plasma! ;)
Great vid Ken, thanks for taking the time.
Certainly helped me understand a few more things about what you guys get up to.
Thank you. Yes, I measure, and taper the end as shown in Slowbro's tutorial.
But recently I've just been laying the line alongside a tape measure instead of marking.
Like Hawk-eye says, I don't think it stops.
Thanks Shewie!
Ken...what a great video!!! I'm lousy at reading directions ... but show me a couple of times and I'm usually good to go. Your video really "showed me" how to make a whoopie sling...thanks!!!
Ken,
You really did a beautiful job. Very clean and clear. I may have to give this Whoopie Sling thing a try.
Seriously, my hat is off to you. And thanks for the bit on the Knotty's HH retro-fit. You inspired me to finally swap out the original lines for Whoopies on my old HH.
Happy Trails,
Really nice Ken! Thanks for the video. I like your method of using the long wire instead of using a the large yarn needle that I have used.
Liked the music too.
Shug: Save them broke mandolin strings! I think I may have a gitfiddle or banjer string somewhere to try for my next one. :DQuote:
Like the pull through wire. Gotta try that
I only have one hole at the end of my HH. Hmmmm, what to do?
I'm surprised ... Expedition? Anyway you can burn another hole by taking a quarter inch bolt and heating it with a propane torch while holding it in a pair of vice locks. Then using that to burn a sealed edge hole right through. It works but don't do it indoors!!!! :woot:
I think the wraps around the stem are what do the main work of holding the hammock to the cord. I'd suggest you proceed just as Ken shows, up to the point where he pushes the key through the 2nd hole. Here you want to do _something_ that encourages the bottom wrap to stay put, e.g., put a clove hitch there. Then carry on just as Ken shows.
You'd want the clove hitch to be loose at first, because you need to do some final redistribution of the rope.
Grizz
The first hole is all you actually need. :thumbup1:
(1) Using one hole, tie a triple sheet bend.
(2) Once your triple sheet bend is complete, thread your eye through the small ridgeline loop and then thread the standing part of the main suspension line (other end of the AmSteel) through the eye.
(3) Back feed all of the slack from the eye back through the bend to snug things up.
Clear as mud ?
Clicking the image below will bring you to "Animated Knots by Grog" for instruction on how to tie a basic Sheet Bend:
http://www.animatedknots.com/photos/...heetbendR4.jpg
The picture below depicts a double sheet bend. Adding one more nested wrap around the hammock body will make the bend a triple.
important Note: If using Dynema (AmSteel, Dyna Glide, etc.) or some other form of high tensile low stretch synthetic line, a stopper knot or other method of secring the dead end of the line is emperitive as most knots will work loose with these ropes as tension is applied and removed. <-thanks for the reminder Opie!
http://www.animatedknots.com/sheetbe...eSheetBend.jpg
The Sheet Bend was created for nearly this exact purpose. Sailors used this bend to secure the corners of sheet sails when grommets were not available in the fabric. The security of the bend is demonstrated in the fact that it is the base structure securing the Bowline knot.;)
H4x.
If your using Amsteel for your double sheet bend, You need a stopper knot or otherwise secure the tail somehow. It will hold under tension, but once tension is relieved, the wraps will work loose.
Trail... No problem. The BEST solution is to splice in a small fixed eye and run the standing part of the line through it to finish it off.
Nope. It is an ULB A-Sym. I did purchase it in late 2002 or early 2003, so maybe they were made differently then. Wow! My hammock is 7yo. That makes me feel old.
That's more or less what I ended up doing. I put three wraps around the stem, the third wrap was half of a clove hitch and then I fed the loop back through the hole after picking up the ridge-line and the free end. I, then, pulled everything tight.
Now that I have done it once (still need to do the other end, got distracted by a game....OH-IO!) I wonder why we need to lock the loop? That section is wound so tightly around the end of the hammock, I just don't see the need. I did a lock (though I have no clue if I did it right, got a link??). It just seems unnecessary in this particular setup.
When I do the other end of the hammock, I just might try a triple sheet bend, though the tail would be a loop, that I feed back into the hole after I pickup the ridge-line and the rest of the suspension cord. So, I really don't need a stopper knot in that scenario as there isn't really an "end".
