I'm looking forward to it. I'll probably be there on Friday evening for an overnight.
I am planning on it as well so add the three of us to your list...
UncleMJM, wife, Texas longhorns
Not sure we're in for both nights, but Friday for sure.
I'm in! :)
I'll be there early Friday.
I'll more than likely drop in (mainly posting so I can find the thread to keep track).
I have plans that weekend. Have fun!

Heck, I shouldn't even try to decipher that one. I hate acronyms.
I was just at the park this afternoon looking for a site for the RV. RV campsites were all full. I bet I could have found two trees to hang my hammock. Not sure what I would with my wife. She want power for the TV.
@sargevining : Thanks for the reply on my other call out on TX hangouts. This sounds really exciting. I'm in! I live about 90 miles west of San Antonio, so it'll be a little bit of a drive, but nothing for us Texans.
This will be my first hangout, so any info you can shoot me is welcomed on what to bring and what to expect. I'm not a noobie backpacker so I know what I need gear wise in that respect, just new at going airborne! :) Just need to know if there are other group activities that contributions are expected, fees, site registrations, etc.
Most folks don't know that most Texans routinely drive 20 miles for take out pizza, and will drive 40 miles to get to a good Tex Mex restaraunt.
Only fees are the Park fees. Keep an eye on this thread. I'll be going down on Thursday to get the camp sites. I'm still working on reserving some ahead of then.
I am planning a section hike on the AT in Oct. and putting together gear now. Hope to have most the gear selected and acquired before the March hang so I can join in the fun. Besides, I need to learn a thing or two from everyone. New to the hang and looking forward to it.

We are going to park and hike into the camping area, right?
You have several options.
1. Show up with me on Thursday and reserve a campsite or two (I'm showing up a day early as belts and suspenders on what the park has promised). Car camp at the campsites from then until you want to go home, and shuttle down to the Trail Head on Saturday to hike back to camp, or hang out at the camp for as long as you want.
2. Show up on Friday with the same intent.
3. Show up on Saturday as described.
I have just spoken to Steve Killian at the Park. The nuts and bolts are this:
I will show up when the Park Opens on Thursday and reserve 3 sites---enough for 24 people, about two times the number who have expressed interest so far. He has already made note that we are coming and is expecting us. As you arrive, you will report in at Park HQ, let them know you are with the Hammock Campers at the Equestrain Primitve site, pay your fees and get your passes. If you plan on parking at the trail head and hiking in, you will need to let them know so that they can give you a sticker which will let them know that your parked car does not represent a lost hiker.
If you are hiking in: Drive to Hale Lake and park. I will be there as early as I can on Saturday and guide the trail if you don't know it or are unsure of your map reading skills. I plan on hiking it both ways on Thursday. We'll take off at 11:00. I'll post my cell number so you can call if you're running late or won't be showing up.
If you want to car camp, the Park will give you a gate access code for the Equestian Area and you will drive back out of the park and go to that entrance. Please note that I will be playing by the rules and will not be giving that code out to anyone not registered with the park.
Also note:
There is one porta potty and the nearest potable water is a hose bib about 3/4 of a mile from the campsite. Those of you hiking to the site should pass by it on your way in. Those who are car camping should bring an ample supply of water, perhaps more than you think you might need.
It's gonna be about a 5hr. trip for me ( http://g.co/maps/v7cun ), so I'm gonna try to maybe get Friday off too. Not that one day will be fun enough, but driving that far it would be more worth it if I at least got two nights out. I work for a school district though and we have Spring Break the week before so it can be tricky getting extra time so close to a break. (*fingers and toes crossed*) -ck
Head out at midnight Thursday and I'll cook you breakfast when you get there (think SPAM). The you can nap all day long while I scout the trail.
Well, I'll toss in some MRE wheat bread, oatmeal, and some fancy coffee, too.
You do the dishes.
I was out there this last weekend and pretty much all the blue trails were closed due to flooding. At the very least, Bayou Trail and Sawmill Trail were closed, I don't remember if Riverview was specifically or not. Granted, it had rained on Saturday morning and we got there Sunday morning, so it was still pretty fresh. However, even some of the trails that were open, such as the NW part of the Hale Lake loop, were still halfway under water, so I'm guessing the flooding was pretty severe to have closed the blue ones down.

The plan is to take the White Oak Trail from its intersection with the Red Buckeye to where it meets Riverview, and thence to the campground. That trail goes along the high side of the river. If the water in the Brazos gets that high, hiking is going to be the least of our problems.
We did get quite a frogchoker Friday and Saturday. The rain guage at Significant Other's house in Richmond read 3 5/8" on Sunday morning. I think we'll be OK as long as we don't have a repeat performance on the 22nd. I will make a post from the campsite on Thursday evening to report trail and campsite conditions.
Well I have spring break off and no plans so count me in I shal also arrive thursday just to get as much time in the woods *** possible
Well I got Friday off, so I might be dragging in late Thursday night/Early Friday morning. Looking forward to it. Quick question, I don't yet have a bug net in my arsenal; should I get one beforehand? With the rains and all and the temps rising are the mosquitos already coming back out?
Gonna be hiking with some buddies the week before at Colorado Bend SP, so I guess I'll go ahead and get one. Had been planning on the ENO Guardian BugNet (been happy with the rest of my ENO stuff so far), but curious if you would recommend another one that would work good with my ENO DN hammock? I do have a ASR that I got from whoopieslings that I was thinking might serve as the RL for the net and not have to use additional suspension on the bug net. Thoughts? Recommendations?
I agree. The terrain around here is lots different frojm Uvalde, fer shure---even different from College Station. Much of the park could almost be classified as tropical jungle swamp, especially at this time of the year.
There's a reason why the pioneers headed inland as soon as they could----
The skeeters were out last weekend.
Not sure if you were planning to order the Eno bugnet online or not, but if you're close to an REI in San Antonio and you have a sewing machine or a significant other with one, there's some directions somewhere for modifying the $14 bugnet from REI to make a nice one for your hammock. You could save a good $30+ that way.
Thanks for the advice corncob, but a seamstress I am not (nor is my wife). That being said, I do have a pattern for a peak bag that I might try my hand at soon!
Well, so much for $60. ENO BugNet on it's way! We might need to get you folks out here further West sometime; out of the swamps and into the hills! *laugh*
I'm planning on doing a little road trip from MN to Texas and would like to stop by the hang at least for a day maybe 2? I'd probably get there sometime Friday the 23rd. Got my vacation request in at work and shouldn't have any issues getting it approved.:D
Sweet! I think a few of us will be trickling in before the "official hang" on Saturday. I got my Friday off request approved, and seriously thinking about leaving from work on Thursday (about 5hr drive). Would have to setup after dark, but hey I'll be outdoors! Look forward to meeting you.
If I'm onshore, I think I can make it.
Never been to a group hang so I will probably have plenty of questions.
I would like to try to make it, I will have to check with the boyfriend to see what his work schedule is for the weekend, and find somebody to watch the dog. As we are new to hanging, it would be fun to see everyone else's setup.
Spoke today with some folks who have used the Equestrian Primitive Site at Brazos a great deal. Some things noted:
1. We should have the site pretty much to ourselves. Hardly anyone goes out there to camp. Most use of the site is day trips by folks riding their horses. Expect horses on a good portion of the trail.
2. Its a long drive down Sawmill Road to get to the site and the site is much more primitive than the other primitive area on the Park. (Remember that you will have to go to Park HQ to register and pay fees, then go back out again to get to Sawmill Road, which is north of the main entrance). There aren't even any picnic tables.
3. Expect skeeters, and prolly other flying things (and my experience tells me that on certain parts of the trail, expect chiggers).
4. Expect both deer and hogs---in the campsite area. She suggested I bring my dog to keep the hogs away. Don't know if I will, I'll have to figure out which will be worse, hogs running around, or the dog barking at them.
The site is remote. There's nothing out there but the river. One way in and one way out. The hose bib that is out there is new and, if I understood correctly, is fed from a storage tank, not a well. Bring lots of water so that you have some you can trust, or treat on site.
She said there were PLENTY of trees in the site. If its like most of the rest of the Park it should be a mix of post oak and other hardwoods.
I guess I'd rather deal with a barking dog than waking up to find a hog under my tarp...LOL!
Bumpin dis even though I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to make it. The mosquitoes told me they'll be there, though :)
Maybe its a good time for everybody who's coming to give a shout out so's we can get a good headcount.
SOUND OFF... #1 I shal be there just got the days off today
haha lol well alright then no biggy
Unless someone hits the reply button before me, I'm #3.
Fore!!!!! Lol!
So great grandma said to great grandpa on the occasion of their 75th wedding anniversary, "Why don't you ever tell me you love me any more?"
Great grandpa replies, "I told you I loved you the day we got married. If anything had changed, I'd of let you know."
Nothing's changed on this end. We're still going.
