Actually, a gear hammock is much better. I have found that hanging anything up on the ridgeline or the straps causes a bit of a problem. If everything is on the ground you may have some problems. How about if good 'ol porky comes along? I have seen more than once on the AT where someone has awaken to boots that were chewed down to the soles by them.
I use a separate one nearby that i made myself with its own cover to keep the porcupines at bay and any other ground dwelling creatures out such as ants, slugs, mice, and even skunks. I have had one sniffing at my pack once and starting to try to chew at it to get in. It was easily shooed (and I never got sprayed). I made it out of an old piece of light nylon since it really does not have to hold much weight. Tie a knot on both ends and use a larks head to tie a rope to.
