I have a War Bonnet Edge tarp and love it I also have an Equinox poncho that works well. To save weight I would like the best of both in one multi use piece of gear. I have made a drawing attached. Is there anyone that can sew that wants to give it a shot.

SO... it's a tarp with a hood built in? That's kind of a cool idea. Would you care if I made one? ( but did not send it to you?)

I think it is very possible to mod the Edge tarp the metal ring are already there all that has to be done is the addition of the hood along the ridge line and a mitten hook at the back of the hood to pull the sleeves up. I just can't bring myself to cutting my Edge Tarp.

For a larger tarp you could probably move the hood to one end and have either some tie ups or velcro added so you can reef the excess.
Walmart sells a tiny little day pack in the camping section that collapses on itself. When expanded the back has a circle on it with a drawstring inside. As you pull on it the pack forms its own pocket or ditty bag. I bet you could use a similar patter to snug it around your backpack Packa style.
Paul from thru-hiker.com wrote an article on a poncho tarp. His is 5'x8'. There is also a free hood template to download. I used it to make a hooded wind/rain shirt out of momentum 90 ripstop. If you have any questions, try emailing him or posting on the thru-hiker forum.

Cool idea. Like I need another project on my list but I think I'll work up a Tyvek prototype to test run once I get some other more pressing honey-do items done.
My main concern is whether the side flaps will billow out and/or gather water when deployed as a poncho. Will have to test to see...
Also might want to add velcro or hook/ring to the bill of hood and on the chest to hold the hood down in windy conditions when in tarp mode. It'll flap around and leak if only closed by the draw string even when the slit is under tension (voice of experience from poncho tarping while in the army).
Only other problem is that I usually set up for a full weekend at a time (base camp) so it wouldn't do me any good except on the rare occasion that I'm actually hiking from place to place and thus on the move during the day.
Be pretty easy to add a couple peices of paracord, then "roll" the hood down and tie it at the ridgeline. That would seal pretty good, I think.
Just talked to Brandon at War Bonnet, I'm getting some scraps for a fee to make the hood. I figure it will be done in a month or two.
The Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape poncho shelter uses toggles and loops to tuck the extra fabric up underneath on the sides. It doesn't look stylish, but it works great.Quote:

I bet you could put mating Velcro tabs about halfway on the diagonals and end up with nearly true sleeves, and it that doesn't work, you can proceed with tucking them under Perhaps a small loop to add to the apex ends to go around your hands? Add a cord for a waist belt and you'll have a very weatherly poncho and tarp. It will work for ground pitching too.Quote:

Here is another idea if you use a rain hat how about a cape.
With that arrangement, I would add a flap with Velcro to cover the head slit in tarp mode, hooks on the flap and loops on the chin side. You could tuck the flap in behind your neck while hiking and that would cover the hook side. You could even have a little strip of loop on the inside to hold the flap in place when tucked in.Quote:

I've never tried it, but I would shy away from making it so the head slit goes from side to side. I doubt it'd be very comfortable or fit very well.
May have to make one just for kicks and grins.

On a logistics side, would this mean that if it is raining when you get to your campsite, you have to choose between having a poncho or setting up? If it starts raining after setting up, you have no raingear? I think I would want to take both.

I've been using Roy Robinson's poncho/tarptent pattern. It makes a really good minimalist tarp, which works for hammocks, though I have since moved to larger tarps.
Two thoughts: I have two of these. I would sell one, if you want a ready made solution. I have also worked out a simple way to use a shock cord and two tarp grips to make an adjustable pack cover out of it. This makes it much easier to deploy in sudden rainstorms, so it functions like a poncho version of a packa. (If you hike solo, it can be difficult to get a pack properly covered with a silnylon poncho.)
Second thought: while a hood is nice, I like a good rain hat better for hearing and peripheral vision. Makes it possible to enjoy the woods in all weathers. Sewing the hood to the poncho is the complicated part.
Any update on progress? Anybody made one of these yet?
I've had the body hemmed, and the hood assembled for months now, I just haven't worked up the nerve to cut a big hole in the center of a nice tarp. My main concern is that the "neck" portion of the hood isn't tall enough to tie off to seal when in tarp mode. When you made yours, did you make the hoods to Roy's specs?Quote:

Recently received my custom Zpacks cuben fiber tarp.
It's a scaled down version of the Zpacks hammock tarp with doors (10' ridge, x 5' baseline, x 7' width) that is a poncho and pack cover as well. He used the same 0.74 black cuben that he uses for his non-breathable rain gear. The poncho tarp got some great use in poncho mode on the prehike in to MAHHA - I was dry, my pack was dry, and I was well vented. Joe came up with some creative solutions to a lot of the problems that have plagued hammock poncho tarps - while I'm still amazed by this new piece of kit (it's a strange kind of gear love I'm sure we can all understand) I can't help but remind people of three points:
1. When a piece of gear does three jobs, and it fails, you're out three pieces of gear. (WV pointed that out to me!)
2. If you're wearing it you've got to take it off to set it up - rain or shine.
3. Ultralight gear (most of the time) helps you more while hiking than at camp. Lightening your load can come at some "luxury" cost.
With this new poncho tarp and Exo pack from Joe at Zpacks, I'll finally get my base weight to sub 10lbs (looking like 7-8lbs). I'm doing this for my thru hike. If I wasn't planning a thru hike I'd probably get a rain shell, pack cover, a hammock tarp with doors, a bigger (heavier) hammock, and I wouldn't mind a base weight of around to 20lbs. In fact, Id like to have all of that more comfortable camp gear one day, but right now I have more walking to do than camping.
So basically, for everyone who hammock camps and wants to go UL, and is the type of person who can sacrifice a little comfort at camp for more comfort on the trail, this might be something you consider. Look for my thread on the Zpacks Hammock Poncho/Tarp for more info (weight, pictures, etc) I'll post it in the next few days.
