Bugs, Bugnets and Winter
I have a JRB bridge and a new WBRR. Both with built in bugnets and I
always zip them up whatever the weather. I just have a more secure feeling
being completely inclosed and I really don't like bugs.
Obviously nets are great for skeeters and flies in the summer time but
when do you ditch your nets for the season? early fall, first frost or later.
I wondered if maybe there are some bugs out there all the time to justify
my year round use of nets. A google search shows there are indeed bugs
in the winter. There are some ants that only come out in winter and some
spiders and believe it or not some Snow Fleas.
I know a lot of people don't even use nets but for me I don't want to share my hammock with any critters.
Especially the dreaded Snow Flea!
I am going to stay zipped up
and claim that I do it for that extra degree of warmth.

I hate the bugs in summer too. But if there isn't too much of a chance of bugs I love the open feeling of not having it even more.

I had to google snow fleas.:D Sometimes I like the net on even if the bug threat is low. Makes me feel warmer and all cocooned.

I like to know that no-one can just walk up and flick me in the nose without making noise of unzipping

Lol, I never thought of that. Here in Michigan Mosquitos can get pretty bad at times and I've even beet bit well after the first couple of frosts. In general though, I usually ditch mine mid November. That might be late for some, but I figure that they aren't going to be very active if at all hen its 30 outside.

Its a bugs world,,just get used to them,,,I very seldom use a bug net, except when I know going to get ate up with skeeters,,however,,most of the nites in the mts..are cool enough to not put up with them,,so use the nets,,and will ditch mine when I can,,to save weight of carrying excess..:)

At 40 degrees the bugnet goes away and the sock comes out....when the chance of a warm spell during a day rest won't happen.

I never ditch the net. Some switch to a sock, but I like to be able to see. I also use pads in the winter when everyone else uses underquilts. I think I am the Bizarro Hammock Hanger as I seem to do everything backwards of the majority.

I live in skeeter heaven and skeeters think I'm the equivalent of a steak dinner. We have plenty of ticks too. That said, me and one or both of my daughters have managed to hang out at least one night every week except one since mid august with no bug nets. I don't know if our skeeters are just weird but their activity seems to taper off to nearly nothing late in the evening. Typically we'll hang up our hammocks in the afternoon but not crawl in until 11:00 or so.
Other bugs...we don't worry much about 'em and they don't seem to have much interest in us.

In my part of Missouri it's got to be down in the 30's and 40's to use my BIAS hammock without a net. My son likes net all the time; likes the sense of security it provides. I LOVE the open feeling and being able to sit in a hammock with a leg off each side, like a lounger. I hate bugs though and there are so many ticks, flies, skeeters and spiders that I would never be comfortable with out a net most of the year. Even last week it warmed up to the 60's and there were some bugs out although no skeeters so I still left the bug net at home. My first hammock was a Hennessy with the integrated bug net so if that was the only one I had, I wouldn't worry about it.
