Does anyone have a side by side comparison of a typical hangers setup and a typical ground dwellers setup? Looking at pack space and overall weight. I have been trying to figure it all out but I am still new to this and not sure I am including everything that I would need for a complete hammock setup.

Like all camping it is season dependent as well....is your current tent heavy, light, tarp etc. What pads? Is your bag down or synthetic.
Don't forget to factor in comfort and versatility.

i wish i still had a tent to show you .... but from what i remember it all depends on what tent and pad you have or are looking to compare it too
my old tent (10x8 tarp) blue pad cut down blue tarp for a ground sheet
and mummy bag my hammock setup takes up less space
so a bigger tent with poles would take up even more room
now if you are using a tarptent and your hiking poles the size difference might not be so great ... so you might save just a small amount of space
but comfort is key too... ;)
In my case, there isn't a significant difference. But it can be, in either direction, depending on your setup. My ground setup consisted of a Henry Shires tarp tent, Westernmountaineering down bag, and the thickest insulated inflatable pad I could find.
Both weight & volume compare closely to my WBBB with down top quilt & partial underwear with a spinn tarp.

I had a blog post about this the other day. Its not about UL setups but it is about my setups. It compares my TarpTent and sleep system with my hammock and sleep system. I know I could go lighter in both setups.

For me and the wife,,our mountain, backpacking experiences included:
Our 3 season setup with Tent.
Nemo Nano Elite tent/footprint 3lbs 5 oz. = 53 oz.
2 BA Insualted Aircore Pads 48 oz total
2 BA Sleeping Bags 84 oz. ea.
Small Tarp with stakes 20 oz.
total 205 oz. or 12lbs 9 oz.
2 hammocks w/bugnets 56 oz.
2 Tarps w/stakes/snake skins 64 oz.
2 TQ for 3 season 45 oz.
2 UQ for 3 season 46 oz.
Total 211 oz. or 13lbs 3 oz.
I find I spend a bit more money in covering all temperature ranges for the comfort I seek in different UQ's and TQ's but the down/weight will decrease with the warmer temps I backpack in and with the change up of equipment. But! Same goes for ground camping/hiking in the different elements. I try and go as light as possible, but still not compromise on comfort so not a gram weinie. Also, you have to take into compareson, the different hammocks available to you and their different weights. Same goes for Tarps. I could go much much lighter hammocking if I didn't take the wife into the equation for the comfort levels I seek to make her enjoyment moreso.
Thanks for all of the information. I think that overall my biggest concern is the bulk more than the weight at this point. Obviously I am new to all of this and I don't have an unlimited budget or the luxury of having collected gear from the last 10 years but as Shug stated about the comfort, that is why I am going through all of this. I was amazed how much better I slept that first night. Being able to use in the BWCA is always an option as there are more trees than you can shake a stick at. Also in the BWCA hanging seems to me to be an easier option as the ground is Very rough in many areas.
I know this is difficult but again thanks and keep em coming. I love reading about all of this. Last week I was reading about whoopie slings and I think every spare piece of hollow braid poly that I own now has a locked brummel or a buried end.
I like the pictures so anybody has a couple samples of what their entire setup looks like all packed up that would be great. I have all the ground dweller stuff of my own for comparison and know how small of a package I can make with that, i need you hangers help for the other side of things.

As we don't camp in the winter do to my work schedule, last few days been going thru our gear, and working gear lists over, and have the wife down to 15lbs Base Weight, and myself 22lbs base weight, and can shift some of that over to her causing me to lighten up a couple more pounds, with 3 season 30 degree setup for hammocking. Can go way much lighter in warmer temps and will be able to by a couple of pounds at least each. Now depending on where we hike/backpack,,throw a bear can in each pack,,and you will end up with a 2 pound plus base weight addition, so you have to take in alot of considerations as to what equipment your going to carry and the comfort level. IF we leave the Crazy Creek folding chairs at home for example which are in our base weight figures now, we can cut an additional 28 oz.s off the base weight. Its a matter of what you want to pack in and out, and how comfy you want to be. Sometimes, you might just find me packing in the equivalancy of a couple of bottles of wine in platties,,lol,,,so like I said, its all in what strikes your fancy to carry/pack. :)
I maybe should have stated that I am not an ultra light guy. In fact last year was a wake up call for me when my brother and I both with 90L packs were discussing how to haul more gear. I for the first time ever thought maybe we have too much. At any rate I really do appreciate all the help.
I guess while looking at the all the UQ/TQ, Tarps lines, etc, it dawned on me that even though the hammock its self packs smaller than most tents it might not be a smaller option. A thought that seems to be the truth.
As for comfort there is no comparison in my mind.

Tent=crawling on the ground in the mud lying on roots and rocks your forgot to move.
Hammocking=always having a wonderful chair with you to take your boots off like a human being, cooking from one is a great pleasure.
Heavy/light=depends on you and your wallet and how strong your back is. You can go super lightweight with tent or hammock or you can carry many creature comforts.
This past weekend I carried a very heavy retro pack but an advanced 22cd century cuben tarp=mix and max to suit the mood.
Most of all have fun and 99% of members here will tell you just that, it is fun! Skinning the cat of being in the woods a different way.

If you are not, then I expect you do not spend much time weighing your gear and analyzing everything to death. So, I'm guessing you probably have a tent which weighs 6 pounds and has a large bundle of poles. It takes decent money and some attention to weight to get a tent with bug net and tarp which weighs less than 4 pounds. If that's true, you will probably end up with a smaller, lighter pack going with any hammock set-up from one of the vendors who are present here.Quote:

IMO there is no such thing as a "typical" ground or hammock set up. One must compare specific set ups.

I would say everything is packed in there really good. The Top Quilt that is in both pictures can't really compress down more IMHO. The tarp is in the Blackbird stuff sack to fill in some of the extra space. (You can see the tan snakeskins through the bag.) Its a massive tarp 12x11', but there is a little more room in there too. The under quilt top left can be compressed some more though.
Tent Vs. Hammock
This question pops its head every now and then, and the best answer is "Hike your own Hike". Do whatever it is that makes "you" happy.
Comfortable sleep is priceless, in my book.
Hanging allows me to do that.
the difference is in the under quilt vs pad. almost everything else can be equated the same. bivy/tarp vs hammock and tarp. top quilt=sleeping bag.
hammock suspension might add a bit of weight but essentially you can go just as light hanging above the ground.

This is essentially the difference between my old ground set up (tarp/bug net) and my current hammock set up. My tarp, quilt, and uq/pad all are equal weight between the two. (or close enough not to really matter) The biggest difference is my WBBB is nearly 8oz heavier than my bug net. Pack size, my hammock set up is slightly larger, but it is so close to nearly be equal. The small increase in pack size hasn't changed how my pack is packed.Quote:

I would agree with you to some extent. I would argue that the difference in weight can be broken down to a different two elements. Those elements would be hammock vs ground cloth. You don't need a ground cloth if you are sleeping in a hammock and you don't need a hammock if you are sleeping on the ground. You can use a CCF pad in the hammock and on the ground so the low weight of the pad will be the same.Quote:

You are correct in the assumption that I haul a heavy tent. Pretty sure that I would loose weight hauling the hammock. Thanks for the pictures keep em coming.
