20° AND 40° UQ - Feeling wasteful

As if there weren't enough of these threads :laugh: It's just the classic difficult decision these UQ's!

I have my 40°+2oz Incubator and love it - cozy and warm in the upper 30's so far.

For colder temps, say 15-35°, I think I would like the 20° Incubator. It may sound dumb but I feel "wasteful" having both at such close temp ranges. Of course I'm not going to try the 40°UQ when it's 15°, but there's only a small window where I would need the 20°.

Maybe I should just get the 0° and cover 99% of situations? What is everyone's experience with a 0° Incubator in the low 30's? No "too" warm, right?

I have come to accept the fact that I will eventually own one of everything from HammockGear...I'm addicted to the soft fluffy heroin! :D

I've used a 0* Incubator on 65-70* nights.

It can easily be vented or just thrown to the side and not used if it is too hot.

You could probably get away with a 40*+2 oz and a 0* and be covered for most situations IMHO (can't hurt to get a 20* in the future too though :shades:)

I would recommend, from personal experience, skipping right to the 0° incubator. I went hiking last weekend and the temperatures were warmer than expected at night (around 40°). I was comfortable with my 0° incubator and 20° burrow. At one point during the night I got too warm and had to vent the top quilt for comfort.

I have the full complement of quilts! My reason is I am a UL'er, and I don't want to carry needless weight! My opinion/thought is carry what the temps dictate, and utilize clothing, food, hot water bottle, and other tricks to manage if the unfortunate should happen and the temps dip down much lower than expected!
FWIW I can push all my quilts by at least 10* lower than they are rated for as I am a "Hot" sleeper!

You can always vent a quilt if too warm, if the quilt isn't warm enough for the given temps beyond what I previously mentioned there's a good possibility your in for a cold night should all things not work right!

My problem is if I get too warm (hot) I begin to sweat and then it's a ruff night for me, so my management of temps n such may not be the norm!

I love my new 20 deg under and top quilt, but I have been thinking about getting a 40 deg set too...so don't get embarrassed, we all have our hobbies :)

i have (2) 40 degree and (2) 0 degree under quilts, but it have never crossed my mind to buy a 20 until now:confused:

I as well own a set of Hammock Gear quilts for each of the changing season (3 sets in my possession as of now and another set on the way) and like Cranky Bear I like to use rated quilts for the temps expected to avoid carrying extra bulk and weight. If I am a worried that the temps might dip below expected quilt rating and or night time temps might be cool then ill bring some extra clothing (which yes washes the weight saving of a lighter quilt but serve dual purpose). That way if I get cold around camp I can wear the clothing around camp and keep me warm at night while sleeping which has worked out well for me in my experiences. I also generally always carry a torso length CCF pad with me (which also serves as my pack frame and sit pad which I can use to supplement underneath me if temps were to really dip below what I expected) So if the expected lows are going to be lets say 35, I can bring my set of 40 rated quilts instead of my 20 rated quilts, save the quilt weight and instead bring a few extra cloths which are useful in the PM and AM around camp.

Then get a second hammock, comfortable enough for you to sleep in, if not preferred. Then you'll be able to invite others to try it, lending that second quilt in most conditions. Truth is, lending someone a hammock to use with you without an UQ anytime it will be below 50F isn''t polite.

At some time, the gearmakers need to expand the market beyond the addicts deep in down. That market gets saturated, the quilts not wearing out.

I have one of each of Hammock Gear's underquilts. I never use the 20* my 0* is warmer and a lot lighter. It's almost as light as my 40*. Get a light 0* from HG and you'll be set.

What I personally did to lighten up my winter quilts (and all my quilts for that matter) was have Stormcrow make me a custom winter burrow out of all 7D and a zero incubator outer shell M55 and inner shell 7D. That cut the overall weight down of the quilts by using lighter material. I'll weigh them tomorrow for you and post the weights if you would like?

My zero is made with a cuben inner and sevenD outer. It is cut to my exact length and weighs 21.75 oz. and is just 3oz heavier than my 40*.

:boggle: now that's light. You got any pics I'd love to see some. I'm gonna weigh my incubator tomorrow to compare I am now very curious about the weight difference.

+1 on the 0*. I have 3 of them and can sleep all the way up to about 50*.

I have a couple of 40* Incubators with +1 oz each that will go to from about 35* up to too warm for an UQ.

(I'm always outfitting my friends for trips).

If you got both of these, you could double them up (like Shug said - for his CRAZY -26* trips. You gotta love that guy).

Personally, I'd go with the lower rated UQ because I think you can adjust it so that you can use it in a much wider range of temps. My under quilt is rated at -10 (custom made Underground quilt) and I've used it in much warmer real time temps up close to 50 degrees. I simply had to hang it a bit loose and open up or vent the ends. Plus use a lighter summer weight top quilt and I was good to go. I figured that carrying the heavier winter under quilt was off set by being able to use the very light weight summer top quilt. I was still warm if the temps decided to dip down lower than forcasted. And could get comfortable if temps went higher too.
In all this, you do need to have already tested so that you know which quilts you can use for the temp ranges you'll be camping in. For example, If temps are supposed to range from say mid 30's to very high 40's, I know to bring my winter UQ and summer TQ. If the low is lower than that, I bring my winter TQ instead. If low's are higher than that, I exchange my winter UQ for my Summer UQ. This is how I rotate my Winter UQ & TQ and my Summer UQ & TQ and it took me quite a few camping trips to figure out what works for me. I'm a very cold sleeper and my quilt choices are made due to that.

I have a 20° Phoenix and 20° Burrow on order figuring I can use them from 20° up to about 60°. These will be my first quilts. Living in the South, for warmer temperatures, I'll use my 45° sleeping bag as a quilt with the 20° Phoenix or if temperatures are going to be warmer at night, I will try my SeaToSummit Reactor Thermolite® Liner as a TQ with the 20° Phoenix and see how that plays. I have a funny feeling that I will eventually wind up with a 40° TQ as my 45° sleeping bag ways a projected (as I don't have my TQ or UQ yet) 16 ounces more than the combined weight of the 20° Phoenix and 20° Burrow :eek:
